So over in the mobiles/pda section they've created an applet to use the free messages servers using your log in details for 085 etc ( http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054940719). I can't code at all, but was wondering would someone be up for giving it a shot to create a nicely designed widget using this open source code as a starting point?

Would be a great little widget to have running. Any thoughts?

hhmmmmmm hmmmmmmm tempting... I always use Callwave as a widget but a generic one that would log in to 02, meteor whatever could be very handy. You sure nothing is out there already? If not, Id give it a go for sure! Was messing with some widget dev lately for a few other bits.

Well in the above post he's actually been running osx so its already developed for the platform just would need conversion into a widget with a nice slick interface. I think a lot of people would use it then.. would be handier as a widget ..go on you know your new mac wants it !!:D

Callwave is handy but its slow to deliver and the daily limit thing sucks. Im usually too lazy or in too much of a hurry to log in to my o2 account in a browser, so yeah a nice widget could be handy ;)

That guys app is Java based... so not such a simple, 'make it into a widget'... bit of 'translation' required ;) Everything should just be written in Java hehe (no bias at all at all)!

Looks good! Could have a go at designing an interface similar to that just to keep it original? What do you think would be needed for it and maybe i'll give it a go along with whoever else on here would be interested? How would it work.. would it try access your phone book online or would you have a built in phone book or an option to access your phone via bluetooth. I'da say the built in would be best. If it was bluetooth I guess it would read out the texts too but thats in another league I'd say. Again I don't know much about coding and how much of whats already there could be used so I could be talking out of my arse here! Oh and I got the glossy screen on my mbp after that debate and I have to say I love it!!

That looks good but I think the ones that try look like phones/pagers are a bit fussy. Something simple but just with the osx glassy type look? Ideas?

o2/vodasms is great, when used off a properly config'd server. Plus it lets you go all terminal retro :D

The widget just didn't work at all for me there.....and the interface is a touch bats

Worth looking at the code on the OP to see how nifty it is, might be a simple Java>Obj C+Cocoa look&feel. Will have a look 2m.

I reckon the generic widget would be the least work, all ready to go really just needs tweaking for the network. Havent read the code to see what the addr book story is, but that could be scripted in easily enough really.

Sounds good I'm glad I asked this question. I had been looking around for a while.

Here are just some ideas for looks/layout I've found on widgets online:

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/email_messaging/orangechsms.html

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/email_messaging/jaikudashboardwidget.html

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/movie_tv/movavionline.html

Obviously two of these aren't sms programs but that sort of style. Would look good and be very useful. I have 500 free sms that never get used
