Problem with Input Devices after re loading Windows CD

My harddrive has crashed so I rang Dell for some advice. I would like to keep all the information on the HD that I had previously.
Dell sent me out the Windows disk and I booted from the CD rom
When windows loads , i can see the desk top which i had before. But now the mouse and keyboard dont work.
The tech said that it was a softwear problem and i would have to be charged by Dell Solution centre to solve it.

Any ideas how to solve it ? Do I need to install drivers etc ?
I could go back into F11 and do PC restore , but i will lose all information and would the mouse and keyboard still not work?

If the drive failed, then a restore CD alone is not much good to you. What error message did you get when the problem first arose?

So you booted the CD you were sent. Did you install it/run it? If it's a Windows CD, you can select to install on the partition where your documents and files are and *usually* your documents will be safe. Needless to say, this is quite a risk to take.

I had a similar problem with a keyboard and mouse on a Dell machine. It turned out that other USB devices were stopping them from working. To fix the problem, I only connected the keyboard, mouse and monitor and they then worked. Hopefully a BIOS upgrade will fix it.

If you did a clean install, your documents won't be on your drive anymore and you will need to make sure all drivers are installed. If you manage to get your keyboard working, do: Start --> Run --> devmgmt.msc --> hit enter. Yellow exclamation marks highlight driver issues hardware. You can then install drivers for these marked devices.
