I am taking a few days out for a road trip and need some ideas for locations on route. I am starting out at Carlow and onwards to Shannon then I am relatively free but am considering heading north from shannon but its not set in stone....

Open to some general ideas as to good locations for landscapes, etc... anything considered location wise !

anywhere in West Cork / Kerry. Head down to Clonakilty, head west from there. You can't go wrong really. Just get a map and hit some of the main towns.

If you do decide to head north, the trip from Lahinch to Ballyvaughan is on the AA top ten drives in the world. On a clear day it is awesome with the Burren on your right and a view of Galway Bay on the left. It could take awhile though. You'll be tempted to stop and explore so many spots!

Waterford has some pretty decent coastlines. Wexford has some nice spots too. I'd do a coastal run around to Shannon if I were you.

    Now that sounds interesting !

I think as mentioned north is the option for me...
So shannon to Lahinch then onto Ballyvaughan for starters ??

If you get as far as Ballyvaughan, it would be a great pity not to continue on to Connemara. On a decent day its spectacular.

Yep, that's it. Make sure you take the coast road though and not into Lisdoonvarna. And the beautiful village of Kinvara is only a few miles further on.

If you get as far as Connemara, you should continue north to Achill Island. The Coast Road (I think that's what it's called) has some great views. Again, you really need good weather to make the most of it.

Might be worth checking out http://www.night-driving.com/ and flick through the 'Great night drives' routes in Ireland.. I'm planning on doing a road trip with some friends around Ireland soon enough, I'll be coming back to this thread!

AS best as I can I've geotagged the photos in my Connemara set but thats only a small part of it. I was on a flying visit to visit my daughter in her gaeltacht college, but you could take photos there for a week.

I suppose the best advice would be to head for Clifden, and dont be in too much of a hurry.:D

If you open this photo, scroll down a bit and the top line of further information will be - taken in Skannive, Galway (map)
Click the link and you get a yahoo map with the location of the photos marked.

Thats how geotagging works on flickr, to use it with your sat-nav I would imagine you will have to input the points manually, but I'm not well up on sat-nav.

Ok I am at the mapping stage now !
So I leave Carlow, head for Shannon and then onwards to Lahinch, then Ballyvaughan...

So far so good, but where next ?
