Would you not get done by Customs as you're buying from the states? Or do they not put the value on the packaging?

You would get done big time.

Ask rockbottom to mark the item down as a gift? I find that some companies on the net do that

get done big time? how much do ya reckon, seems like a good deal though and im looking to buy a set...

You could end up paying up to 21% VAT, import duty on the value of the item, delivery and insurance (if any). Maybe it is still a good deal after that, I don't know. Also marking the item as 'gift' doesn't work, you might as well be putting a sticker on it saying 'Expensive items inside, do not check'. :D

I bought some golf clubs from the states last year,i had to pay about 35% extra all in.
    Works out as
(Goods + Shipping ) Add duty ,then add VAT then Administration charge.
    Its double tax.

I've bought from rockbottom before and did get 'done' by customs, as in paid what was due on the item. Sometimes you can still make savings, but usually it makes buying in the shops here or the uk as cheap..

You can get a similar set with 3 woods and a bag included for about €400 in the uk and probably here too.

Am I right in thinking that, as long as the value of the item is less than €100 you don't have to worry about Customs??

Lots of online retailers will not mark something as a gift either as they cant insure it for the right ammount then.
Much better to buy stuff in Europe so you do not have that worry in your mind.

Or go over on holiday and bring them back yourself and pay the baggage charge.

    it's not €100
    from
    http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/leaflets/pn1179.htm

Consignments not exceeding a total value of €22 may be imported without payment of Customs Duty and VAT.
    &
Relief from payment of Customs Duty and VAT is allowed on gift consignments from outside of the E.C. where the following conditions are met:

    1. The value of the gift does not exceed €45

or have them sent to someone in the USA who will post them to you via US postal service.

Mark as gift & remove all reference to contents - tally Ho!

Customs are no fools. As Ruu posted, that's a red flag to them and worth checking further. It might work sometimes but not every time

lads, the last 2 orders that were made there was no customs at all, it is couriered in by fed ex and doesnt go near An Post like other post, so in the last month there has been no duty, just ordered a full set of wilson left handed clubs for $169 delivered, i'll let you know if i get stung this time...

just seen this thread of interest is there any concensus out there about stuff from the US. like what carrier to use FedX, UPS you know all the differnet shipping options......

I was onto an ebayer dude about a small ultra portable laptop so if you can imagine with tight reasonably small packing it might be quite a small box he told me he could put down any declared value i want and package contents but he told me that obviuosly thats going to impact on any insurance claim i make if the package is lost damaged etc.

Do customs fall for that if he marks the package $70 blank cd's or whatever would customs rock in on that or not

I'm aware i'm leaving myself exposed as regards his end you know sending broken material etc. but what do you experts think would it work

I order a wilson driver from rock bottom golf on monday it was shipped tuesday morning and gota phone call at 9:00am this morning asking for directions to my house. Now that what I call service. An envelope sent from dublin to cork would take longer.

Driver was under €40 so I didnt have any customs problems.

i got a replacement itrip as mine was faulty and it was fedexed here from the states but yet hi had to pay customs on it

Fed Ex normally pay for the customs and charge you for it at a later date. i ordered a camera from the states and only got a bill from fed ex all most 5 weeks later.. so watch out for that extra charge..

Same story for me and the camera was faulty and was returned and the amount refunded but FedEx still demanded payment and I am still waiting for money to be returned from Customs - taking forever!!

Fedex and other companies invoice you later for the customs & duty and also add their own service charge (for me it was €7.50 as far as I remember)

Got mine today - Fedex - ordered a Taylor made Driver R7 - also got the Free Tiger Woods 'Authorised DVD collection' which came with 3 Nike Balls !

No tax asked for - UPS usually ask for tax before they hand over the goods.

I've always wondered if this Fedex policy is legal. Why can someone not say to them that they will settle their own personal tax liability with the revenue commissioners themselves.

Because our greedy Government introduced a new law a few years ago making all couriers liable for the charges.

    happy days...

    Hi,

Seriously considering ordering off these guys - does giving a home or work address make any difference.

What kinda delivery would you expect to pay on a full set of clubs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,170 ✭✭✭scout353

Ordered the 2007 Wilson Deep Red Driver last night as well as 3 & 5 Woods for $109. Even if I get stuck for customs it is still a bargain!!!

Also ordered large ball retriever as well as a box of golf balls and total cost including delivery was $162.

Interesting to see how long delivery takes.

Wouldn't mind ordering off this crowd myself but I've been stung by fedex before. Ordered a phone from an ebay user in hong kong. Item was delivered grand but 2 weeks later fedex send me a letter looking for €40 even though the parcel was marked as a gift? Made the mistake of forgetting about it for a while and then all of sudden I'm getting letters threating legal action. I paid up just in time. I've heard if you get taken to court by debt collectors it can ruin your chances of getting mortgage, loans etc in the future.

Anyway if anybody gets really stung by customs tax let us know :)

as has been mentioned already , customs comes a few weeks later with fedex

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 gmailer

Lads, my wilson clubs arrived yesterday with fed ex, no sign of customs but i'll give it a few weeks, my da got his 2 weeks ago and he hasnt been stung with customs.
the complete set came in a sealed wilson box, head covers on the hybrid 3 and 4 and all in idividual wrapping too...not bad for €120...

I bought a set of Clubs, 4 dozen balls and some gloves about 3 months ago. Very cheap even with the FedEx shipping charge. No duty whatsoever has been charged.

The thing is that when shipments are entering Ireland, customs perform a random sampling of imports. It just depends on how lucky you are in the avoidance of duty liability.

Well worth the risk given the savings on offer.

    :):):):):):)
