Inline Skating

Want to start skating and am not interested in skate boarding. Would prefer roller blades. I will have up to €120 to spend on skates, online or off.

While I don't need amazing one's, I would like to get decent one's so any advice is appreciated on brands and models as I have no idea on skates.

    Thanks,

Could stretch to higher prices if necessary.

also consider what type of stuff you want to do, different designs suit different stuff, stuch as street, ramp/park .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Well, I will probably be skating street the majority of the time but will be going to the park as often as I can.

    Where is skate city?

Is that out by the airport? Or is that ramp city?

Skate City is on Crown Alley, a few doors up from the Bad Ass cafe and across the road from Eamon Doran's pub.

Also consider www.ignitionshop.com I have used them twice and the stuff has shipped super quick with no suprises, no "treats".

Also, just to throw my 2 cents in. I started skating again after 10 years off. A friend told me to try out xsjados. I was a bit skeptical at first but they are amazing. Also, Ireland's own Al Hooi has a new USD model coming out soon so you could try and get your hands on that.

    Peace

ah god they still sell the ole roces majestics....they used to be the shiznit when i was skating way back when

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

Man they still are the shiznit from what I'm told. I loved them when the first came out and was thinking of getting them again.

Never mind majestics, I was rolling with a dude last weekend. He was wearing his Roces Streets, with Hyper Dwarfs and Kyriptonics grind wheels, senate grind plates. Such a blast from the past.

Did you get them in skate city? Yesterday at about 3? Someone was in there and got some just as I walked in.

I have Roces Graal. Are they any good?

And Fianna, yeah that was me. Just got them.

Mine got really muddy the other day as I kept going onto the grass, They aren't shiny anymore. :(

Mud won't wreck the wheels will they?

It'll probably trash your bearings. Get some bearing cleaning fluid and oil quicksmart!

    Really? ****.

it happened, like, last Wednesday.

    I'm screwed.

Nah man, I mean your bearings are metal. You destroy them by getting them wet (rust) or getting grit and dirt in them (grinds them down).

So basically just dont skate in the wet or in mud. Now if you learning or what ever sometimes your gonna want to roll onto the grass to help you stop of what ever but seriously, try not to do that.

    Wreckless...
We skate in gorey most Sundays (we come down from Dublin) and of course your never open. A couple of the guys said you'd open up if we called you. ANyway, one of my mates is heading down to you this week end to get some billy o'neils (USD) if you have them?

    Thanks man

    Peace

    Hi, guys,

just wanted to say that I am always around Gorey anyway, anytime of the day, weekday, or weekend, i live only 5 mins from the shop, so please feel free to call me for anything. my contact details are on the site and it says this also.

    thanks people;)

Yeah, well, this was just muck, it wasn't wet or anything. I was doin jumps over bags into the grass, now, 1 wheel on each skate makes a strange noise, like a rattling, when I spin it.

I'm sure when I skate around on them again it'll be grand and kinda, fix itself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

Nah dude it'll probably wreck your bearings. You probably have dirt or grit in the bearings, So take them out, open them up, clean them and oil them then replace them.

Wreckless, yeah I dont want to call you, have you come down to the shop and then just browse and leave. Ill head down some saturday instead of putting you out.

    Peace

So, I have to buy new bearings already?

I've only used them once!

No dude, take them out of the wheels, open them up, clean them, oil them then put them back into your wheels and continue to skate on them.

They should last a few months depending on how much care you take of them and how much you skate them.

    Peace

Hope you don't mind me hijacking the thread for my own gain!

I have big feet and I'm looking for big skates (Size UK 13 in a shoe, so I guess size UK 14 skates). Anyone got any idea where to get these? I've had a look on ebay although the shipping cost is quite high :(

    It is what it's.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

    First, RE: Bearings.... http://www.inlinewarehouse.com/tipsagg/cleanbearing.html

    Second RE: skate size.

I take the same size shoe as you oneweb, but I get my foot into a 12 skate. The idea that you need a skate bigger than your shoe is nonsense... I mean it makes sense if you 12 years old and your gonna grow a couple of sizes in a year otherwise its not necessary.

So if you can, try on a pair and see what fits well... all skates fit differently, and they should fit differently depending on what you plan to do. I wear mine for an hour at a time max so being a little small is fine.. if I could fit it a 7 I would!! big skates are not good!

If your planning on skating street or park then you could by a pair of xsjados. They would allow you to wear a slim runner inside them.

    Peace

I skated a bit on Tuesday and the skate's were fine, they rattling has stopped and I think I'll clean them sometime next week.

I know need some advice on starting to try some tricks. I am quite confident on the skates, to stop I just do a 180 kinda to face the other way and I stop quite quickly.

I want to try a grind but don't exactly know where I should be placing my feet etc.

Any advice for making the step up to tricks?

    Thanks,

There is a good guide for doing grinds on toxboe.com...it tells you all the basics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Ah nice one, are you talking about the trick guide yeah?

Yeah, it's pretty helpful. I'm going to try it out as soon as possible. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Been trying a few grinds to no avail. Can get the right foot sliding but can't get my left foot up in time. Doesn't help that there are no curb's around that don't go around glass and I'd be pretty ****ed if I went through the window of a shop. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

    Try a skate park?

Also, what type of grinds are you trying? Which foot is doing what? etc.

Your best bet is to go to a skate park and ask someone there for advice, they will be able to watch you and tell you exactly what to adjust.

If its just basic competancy and being able to move well on your skates it just takes practice.

    Peace

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

Nah, I can move around on the skates fine. I'm confident etc. I approach the curb at 45 degrees and step onto the curb, my right foot goes grinding on the wax but my left foot never does.

I perfected two footed stalls yesterday though so, maybe I'll do the grind today.

I'm trying a frontside grind by the way. Also, when waxing the curb, do you wax the skate's h block as well? That's what I'm doing.

You dont have to wax the H-block, I dont find much difference.
Make sure you have proper skating wax too, otherwise you wont move anywhere.
