I have just started to play around with settings on my D40 using my kit lenses; 18-55, 55-200
I took some shots at the rally and would appreciate any comments recommendations you may have

Lookin' through your pans, none of the headlights are sharp. The headlights of a car are the equivalent of a persons eyes. It's not your fault they're not sharp, you've just fell victim to a phenomenon known as turning focal plane.

The rest are great though !

    great pics

how do you get that action motion, with the car in focus but the surrounding all hazy??

The Phoenix Park is a great place to try all this out, this weekend, and free too.

    Some lovely photos there.

    Thanks guys for the comments.
This is the first time I tried the panning shots. I tried different shutter speeds and focused on the car ignoring everything else. I followed the car for about 1-2 seconds to try and judge the speed. I switched to shutter mode and my first few attempts the shutter speed was too low and nothing would come in shot so I gradually brought it up 1 step at a time until i got what I wanted. I probably could have come up 1 or 2 more steps.

using the official cars and sweepers are great for test shots ahead of the actual rally cars.

A great tutorial and very useful info. I tried to use it - to good effect in some spots, over the weekend at the Phoenix Park races.

Not easy at 1/60th but if you get it right, it looks brilliant.

    Cheers.
