Civil Weddings and the Catholic Church

    Hi
I'm getting married in Italy next year and we were starting to do our paper work recently. All was going smooth until our parish priest informed us that the Bishop does not want us to have a civil wedding in Ireland and wants us to do both civil and catholic in Italy. It was my understanding that the two are separate and can be done completely separate. We contacted our wedding planner and priest in Italy who both told us that they had never heard of this approach before as the majority of people decide to go for civil in Ireland for handiness sake.

Has anyone any experience with this as we are thinking of going back to our local priest and questioning him on the matter but don't want to cause too much hassle. If the catholic church do not want our wedding then we may change our mind. At the moment you pay quite alot of money to them for having your wedding there in the first place and having a civil wedding in Italy can cost you up to 3000 euro after legal expences and the like.
    All information appreciated.

    Regards
    Tom
