    Hi guys,

I bought a network switch yesterday from a well known computer company. I read the tech spec on the unit before buying it, seemed to meet my needs so went ahead. It arrived today and I couldn't find a way to set the IP address. I rang Tech support and it turns out this is an unmanaged network switch, i.e. plug n play but requires a DHCP server (which I do not have). My question is this:

Would it be cheaper to buy a server and set up the DHCP server (we will need a server eventually just not at the moment only 8 machines on the network) or bite the bullet and purchase another switchr? (the computer company are saying that the mistake was mine and will not swap the switch for another, which is annoying as I have offered to pay for the pickup and of course any difference in price)

Buy a server or a switch/router with a DHCP server. Buy through a different company though those guys sound poxy. Who are they?

    Hi Ron,

Little confused as to what you are trying to do.

I assume you have 8 pc's on a network WORKGROUP

are you attempting to share internet over these pc's and file sharing hence the need for the switch.

drop me a line back with what exactly you guys are looking to do with that network, as you can have any one of those computers on your workgroup act as a DHCP without the need of a server depending on what exactly you are aiming at doing.

    regards

    N Bradley

you don't have a DHCP server

Broadband routers / wireless access points have them built in.

you can even run a DHCP server on Windows 95 ( will try to find link to one that isn't shareware and does work )
or setup ICS , internet connection sharing

look at http://tftpd32.jounin.net/ - it saves settings in an ini file so you should be able to assign a static address to the switch.

Found it - simplier one http://ruttkamp.gmxhome.de/dhcpsrv/dhcpsrv.htm
    easy to use http://ruttkamp.gmxhome.de/dhcpsrv/dhcpsetup.htm

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I was able to find an old router here that I put between my eircom router and the new switch and use that router as a DHCP server. Everything working as I need it now. Thanks again and sorry for the stupid question. My programming skills far outshine my hardware/IT skills but learning a bit more everyday (:D not much choice as I'm the IT/programming/phones/coffee person :D Ah the working life!).
