I am using portable software running from a mem stick.
Not running through any proxy(turned it off)
using portable firefox. So cookies, history etc are not been saved on machine. Only on my mem stick.

are they able to monitor me otherwise?

Its still possible as you are going through the network to get to the Internet, depending on what monitoring software they have installed. For example, I know in my place they have monitoring software on the network port so they can even check your messenger usage. It all depends on how strict they are and how serious they are on cracking down on none work related things.

Absolutely. You're still using their network so all the data traffic can be captured by them and analysed to see what you're doing.

If you shouldn't be browsing stuff at work, then don't try and be sneaky to get around it. You'll get caught and have to deal with the consequences.

well that is true, I use it on my lunch hour to check email etc.

Have had access for a few months now and nothing said so I don't think anything will be. There is no IT and they seem to be running a primitive networking system anyways.

Alot of companys who have no so called "IT" department actually do have a remote admin. Just be carefull what you look at, and if it's only for email you should be alright, just dont click the dodgy penis enlargement emails ;)

well we do have remote access to all the machines and there is an external company who fixes IT issues but that is as far as it goes I think.

I use it the odd time for product research but to be honest I don't want to get stung because I checked my email.

A lot of SME's have very lax IT security, so I'm guessing this is the op's situation. I can't imagine an outsourced IT support contractor is going to bother trying to catch people browsing unless the boss specifically asks them to.

For the business' own protection they really should have some kind of filtering proxy installed at the minimum. An open internet connection is just asking for trouble.

Being clever doesn't prevent your boss sneaking up on you as you update your bebo :p
