SKY+ Recording to DVD

    Hi,
Recently got Sky+, and lastnight, I was experimenting with copying sky+ recorded programs to DVD.
I followed the instructions, as described in the manual - i.e.
    - Go into Planner
    - select the program to record
    - press red for copy
    - press select
    - press record on DVD recorder
    - press play on sky remote

    Problems:
The program being recorded played as it was being recorded (as expected), but, the TV switched to 4:3 Letterbox format (black bars top and bottom). Even when finished recording, this problem persisted, during "live" broadcasts - I could only get it back to normal 16:9 by switching the box on/off. Surely this is not right? I'm pretty sure I have all the Scart cables, etc connected up correctly.

I would have thought the DVD player might recognise when the program being recorded was over - but it didn't, and continued recording the Sky menu screen!

Also a bit annoying that you have to watch the program being recorded - i.e. can't let it record in background and view something else.

Overall - not too impressed with this, if this is how it should actually work!

EDIT: After some further reading, it seems the "letterbox" issue is a known Sky+ bug! http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=523880&highlight=dvd

You can only record the output of the digibox using the copy function. Therefore, you have to watch what you're recording. The Sky+ box on its own can't blast your DVD recorder with IR commands to stop it recording. You can get a special device to enable your box to do this however.

Are you using a widescreen TV?

What channel was it? Some broadcasters aren't great at flagging what they're broadcasting and so you end up with the wrong aspect ratio.

Have you set up the aspect ratio under Picture Settings on the PVR?

    cheers for the reply!

So, it looks like most of my issues are normal limitations of the system. Ah well.

However, the widescreen/letterboxing issue is a known Sky+ issue, which has only recently surfaced I believe (see my link in my original post to AVForums).

To answer your questions, yes its a widescreen set, and I have all the correct settings (on both digibox and dvd) - set to 16:9, RGB output, etc. I had experimented with recordings on various channels and the problem occurred every time.
