Hiya, First time user of boards and returning to two wheels after years n years. Just got prov licence - seem to have 'lost' my full A somewhere over the years :( but have full B for 20+ years and full NCB etc.etc
I'm 41 (yep an oldie:rolleyes: ) Anyone got any ideas on how much I might pay on a Honda Hornet 250?? - before I go an start off with Aon or Carol Nash???? (Obviously I will need it restricted to 33bhp) Cheers...

The only way to find out how much is to ask the insurers, they all seem to use random number generators  play one off the other as they all seem to be willing to drop their quote to match a competitor.

Your car NCB is useless on a bike policy.

You only legally lose your full "A" entitlement (or any other) by letting your full licence lapse for more than ten years (and then you'd lose all other classes too.) If the local authority 'forgot'* to include it at renewal time you should not be penalised for their mistake. I wouldn't just let them away with it if I were you, after all the stupid restriction rules are no joke.

Training training training did I mention training? If I'm off the bike for 2 weeks I feel a bit rusty...

    * Some people in the UK think there is a bit of a conspiracy going on to 'forget' to include bike entitlements when renewing licences - in the hope that it won't be noticed and in years to come it will prevent a born again biker getting back onto the road easily. Hmmm....

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Don't waste your time with CN - they won't insure you without a years NCB. AON are the best of the bunch at the moment and you won't need to restrict any bike which is Group 5 or lower (ie 250 Hornet, CBR250 etc.) Just ring them for a quote and also try Quinn Direct for a comparison but don't expect to be bowled over by their customer service. Being over 40 is the best way of getting cheap insurance!!

Get training with MRSA or any of the reputable companies near you and buy decent protective gear. Safe driving.

OP: FYI: similar situation to u, Nash yday quoted 1300 and Quinn 800 for the same thing.
    Pan European ST1100 / value 5k/comp/no ncb/full licence/age 54/

Nash has 450 deductable versus Quinns 250

Do u have a www/ fone number for Aon?

yes they will! my very first insurance was with CN! Once you're over 25 they should quote you on a provisional with 0 ncb.

Thanks for all advice...I will contact ansh Aon and quinn over next few day..
But just wondering would it make sense for me to buy a Honda Varadero 125 Grouo 2 I believe - instead of Hornet, use it for a year, do some training course get my Full A and a year NCB and then get bike of choice?? Bearing in mind my last bike was 15 + years ago..a yamaha XJ650...how would Honda Varadero 125 be for round city..would I feel like getting off and pushing it :D

Depends on how big you are: I an 6-1, 15 stone so I need a bit of bhp.

I sold my silverwing because it had no bhp [ it was the old imported model

I sold my K1100 because it got too big for town and got a Pantheon 125: wonderful for around town: awesome little item

On the insurance size, Nash seem to ignore the Group numbers, tghey tell me they dont use them.

I would get a quote form each one and then when u have ur ref number with all of them u can just call up with a different spec and get a revised quote v quick.

Off topic a bit but if using any of the toll roads get the sensor for the top pocket of jacket: they work a dream.

If your trying Quinn Direct my advice would be to ring them a couple of times as you could get a different quote every time, tell them you have an alarm and its garaged, should get handy quote.

Lying to a motor insurance company is not a good idea. In the event of a claim, they start digging, find out you lied and use it as a valid excuse to not pay.

There is enough fraud, corruption and theft in this country without users of this forum actively encouraging it:mad:

Keeping in mind of course that as a biker with a provisional licence, you're not licenced to be on a motorway where most of the tolls are...

To OP - I'm a born-again biker, got my prov licence last year along with a Suzuki Marauder 250cc, slightly older than yourself, best quote from AON at just under 290 euro. Dropped to 262 this year - CN wanted double, Quinn Direct had no record of my type of bike on their system so couldn't quote!

Information on quotes like that without any supporting detail is less than useful

Ok, I left out the bit about all quotes being Third Party, how much more detail do you need?

Age would also be a factor. I paid far more when I had a Yamaha XVS 250. Aon discount quite a bit if the rider has a car policy.

I thought my Prov A only covers me on <33bhp? As far as Im aware an unrestricted Hornet 250 is 40 bhp? Surely Insurance would be invalidated if I drive a >33bhp ??
Anyhow Im getting quotes tomorrow..will advise.
Thanks for all the advice..dying to get back on two wheels - cant believe I left it so long..Keeping my Alfa as well though :)

Sometimes if a bike is heavy a power/weight ratio interpretation is allowed, as the law is a bit vague, but it will allow the insurer to drive a coach and horses though that sort of gap when claiming. Anyhow the Hornet is light enough and cannot be taken as compliant if one wishes to comply. Doing the Aon assessment and taking the test with a hired school bike might help - applying to Raheny will bring a test date within a few weeks.

    Ok so..insurance quotes ::::
    AON
    41 year old prov licence
Bandit 600 factory restricted or honda varadero 125 or Honda hornet 250 restricted (with one session training)
    TPO €345
    Comp €650

    Jealous???
I'm gonna do one training session and get a hornet :))))
Thanks for all assistance..sometimes getting older has it's advantages :))

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,044 ✭✭✭Wossack

crazy aon, those are three differently grouped bikes...

    FR bandit - group 5
    hornet 250 - group 6
    varadero 125 - group 2

and the same quote for all?

    /slightly off topic
people often say, ring back a couple of times to get different quotes, how does that work? they have all yer details from the first time you called and will just pull up the original quote... :o

    Get training with MRSA
    I lolled :)

CN do use groups - just different groups to Aon. Dunno about Quinn. Daft as in the UK all insurers use the same groups and it saves everyone hassle.

Aon might not insist that you restrict a Group 5 bike, but to be strictly legal you have to obey what your licence says and not what they say. Just as cc has little real link to power, there's no guarantee that a group 5 or lower bike will be learner legal or not.

Well in actual effect, prices were a couple of euro different..crazy bit was that Hornet after one training session is €3 cheaper than varadero????
Still worth taking the session methinks..
and yes I will be getting Hornet restricted..just in case !!!
