Considering buying one. Can't afford the insurance or running costs of the Gti, but I'm wondering how the Golf Driver 1.6 runs. What is it like to run? Is there anything I should look out for structural-wise or buying wise?

Basically they're a GTI with a 1.6 engine, not the suspension set up just the trims. Great car and very underrated, parts are for pennies even new. Try and get one with powersteering or you could even fit it quite easily afterwords. Good choice though, loads of tuning stuff out there too. I have 6 mk2 GTI's myself and can't understand how more people haven't copped on to them.

im considering buying one myself too, as my first own car.

junkyard, what are the main differences between the suspension set up of the driver and the gti?any other differences aside from the engine/brakes?can gti parts be fitted to the driver?

    thanks for any help :)

Whoa junkyard, did you say six GTi's??!!! you brave man! My cousin has just restored a 1991 16 valver and he says he is a bit sick of it. (little niggles here and there. Actually i think he's too much of a pefectionist!) tis mars red and has the original alloys, electric windows etc. what spec are yours??

The spec. is basically GTI on the driver but standard Golf engine, suspension and brakes (discs front and drums, rear) the GTI has lowered suspension and disc brakes all around. The great thing in my view is how simple they are to maintain, anyone with a Haynes manual and an interest could fix one. You couldn't compare a modern Golf to a classic one in a million years, the new ones are a major headache.
Yes superboy I have 6 GTI's and they're all basic spec, no electrics to go wrong, and that's the way I like them and all 3 doors too.
I was actually thinking of putting an Audi 130bhp turbo diesel engine in one of them, it would make a very interesting car, very fast and economical too. I've seen a few advertised on the Pistonheads website with 2.8 VR6 engines fitted at they seem to work out well. I'd really prefer 4 wheel drive for that kind of power tbh. though.

I often go to Switzerland and when there I have seen a few mark 11 golf 4x4 about 2 inches higher than normal with a spare wheel stuck on the back.
    Any in Ireland?

I've seen them too but they look a bit agricultural for my liking, I'd prefer a standard looking GTI with 4x4. I'm not sure if they were ever made tbh. I did see one like you mentioned, but it was on German plates, here last summer.

Those Offroad style mk2 golfs are called golf countrys, very rare and odd looking...
I have a mk2 golf GTD, improved everything to GTi spec. It's a great car in every aspect. You will be happy with your purchase :)

    Hi trev44,

One of my mates is selling an 86 MkII GTI at the moment. Drop me a PM if you want his contact info.

for junkyard, any chance you could shoehorn the 4WD system from one of those pumped up golfs along with a 2.8's into one of your GTI's? I'd like to see the look of on a few of the boyracers faces! :|

It could be done alright but I think it would still look a bit 4x4, as in high off the ground.

I bought my Golf Gti from this guy in Bristol. Its mainly Gti's he deals in but if you give him a ring he might be able to find a Mk II driver for you. :)

He often has drivers in stock too. ;)
