Cuban Cigars

What's the story with Irish people who want to bring small amounts of Cuban cigars back home from Cuba? Will they be confiscated by US Customs? Is it better to put them in hand luggage or the main luggage?

Are you planning to fly home via the US?

Normally people fly via the UK and perhaps through Jamaica or another Carribean island.

If you are just making a connecting flight in the US and not actually making a stopover, you should be okay with them in your checked in luggage.

Be very careful about where you buy your cigars. Under no circumstances should you buy from someone on the street offering you discouted cigars. The quality is very poor and they can be confiscated and you could get a fine too.

    Buy from authorised outlets only.

Like Mike said don't have them on you if your flying via the US. In fact don't even tell them you were in Cuba if possible. If thy find anything that even looks like it was bought in Cuba you'll be in for a thorough search.

Via anywhere else is fine just but them in a shop and keep the receipts. What they sell on the street is rubbish.

I'm not 100% certain of all the details - I'm asking on behalf of a friend who sent me a text to check it out. He's going to be flying into the USA from Mexico and catching a flight home from an American airport. I think (but am not certain) that he'll be staying for a day or two in the USA before coming back to Ireland. I also don't know whether they were purchased in a shop or from a shyster on the street.

First of all its not possible to fly between the US and Cuba directly so either they were bought outside Cuba or he is flying from Cuba to somewhere else and then on to the US. If he is staying in the US before travelling home the only place bags would be checked would be customs after an international flight. Chances are he wouldnt be stopped and if he is I doubt very much the would be confiscated. Sure Arnie smokes them publicly all the time. :)

If he is coming from Mexico, then he should be fine. Remove any wrappers etc that would indicate that they come from Cuba....
