Depend on how active you are really. Have one in the morning anyway?
    Whats your diet like?

Give more info to get a more reliable answer

Both really... doesn't neccessairly have to be in shake form tho.

Omellete in the morning perhaps? (I eat a chicken breast after my cereal but ti's not very tasty first thing in the am...)

Hanley is spot on, keep the protein coming in all day, from wholefood sources where you can.

Relate question - if I go to the gym in the morning I'll usually have a tuna sandwich for breakfast about 20 mins beforehand. I mightn't eat then again until lunch (might have a slice of turkey straight after). Is it a good time to have a protein shake straight after workout?

Also, new to this game - could anybody recommend a good protein shake? Do they taste ok? Could you drink it at your desk at work without looking decidedly odd? Are they expensive? Would I need to take more than one a day if I get natural protein from breakfast and/or lunch? Can you have too much protein or is it just passed on if not used? Good God that's a lot of questions. Thanks!

IMO You would probably be better of with a recovery shake rather than a pure protein post work-out. The profile is normally around 2:1 carbs to protein.
As for which one to recommend, alot of people on here use RAM. Its yummy, i noticed a definite improvement in recovery time when i started taking it, also my DOMS was significantly reduced. As to whether you can drink it at your desk without looking odd it depends where you work. I normally slam mine in the gym so i didnt have to worry about that. Price wise its not too bad, check out www.pronutrition.ie for details. there prices are fairly reasonable plus you get free delivery.

Supplements are just that supplements so if the rest of your diet is in order it should be okay with just post workout.

As to whether you can eat too much protein, i am sure that it is possible. But in my experience, getting your kcals are over maintenance on a high protein low carb diet to be quite difficult. It comes down to your overall diet IMO.

yep but as ali said generally best to have some simple carbs aswell in basically a 2:1 ratio of carbs:sugar
    Gumbyman wrote:

    yes, I could
    Gumbyman wrote:

It depends on if you get one you like
    Gumbyman wrote:

it depends on if they see you mixing it or not, as that is when they generally start asking the "what are you doing" question

Again it depends, protein shakes in them selves ae quite cheap, you can get Big Whey for as little as €50 for a 6lb tub or around 54c per serving. RAM which is a specially designed post workout drink works out more expensive but is the best tasting supplement ever
    Gumbyman wrote:

it is only a supplement so you should be trying to get as much of your protein as possible from natural resources
    Gumbyman wrote:

there are a few people you say you can have to much protein but that generally only refers to people who do not keep them selves properly hydrated

Thanks guys! Much appreciate the time taken to reply here. I have just ordered 2 tubs of RAM from that website (2 for €59.99). I'll probably mix it up at home before I go to the gym and wolf it down right after. Got orange and strawberry. Looking forward to tasting the stuff now. Intrigued!:)

I mix ram with water, honestly the stuff tastes so good (orange and lemon and lime are the ones i have tried)and mixes so easily that just throw it into a bottle or shaker before the gym, add water post workout, shake and drink.

The ProNutiriton shop in Phibsboro's where it's at. And yes, RAM would be a much better option.

Also the supplement shop on camden street. Either of the two shops are sound decent guys to deal with and will steer you in the right direction.

And take it after your workout, works a dream.
