3 Mobile Broadband - Playing Online

    Hi all,

Long time lurker here writing my first post on poor experience from playing online with 3 mobile broadband.
Does anyone else play online with a mobile broadband provider? And if so how does it work for you?
I ended up donking off a few quid by getting timed out of cash tables and getting abuse thrown at me in Sit & Go tables for taking so long to make moves! It was not a good experience over the last few days.
Its pretty difficult to improve your online game when you are worrying about a dodgey connection. I'm in the Limerick city area, and when I bought the 3 USB modem, I asked is it suitable for playing poker online, and of course the sales guy says "Yes of course, no problem with that at all".

Now I reckon my best course of action is to ask for my money back, and try to source a better provider.
Unless someone knows of any methods in which I can increase connection speeds for online poker.

Any advice would be very welcome,
    Cheers,
    Bantee

What speed is it actually doing?check on SpeedTest, though AFAIK most, if not all, sites will run happily on a 56K modem.

I'm at work at the mo, but thanks for the link i'll test it out at home later. I think maybe the area of the country I'm in, and also it could have been busy over the bank holiday weekend.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does "pt" mean? I set up an account with Paddy Powers as i don't have a credit card and its easy to lodge cash over the counter (thats where i dwindled my cash away at the weekend). If i need to register with another site, i can also use moneybookers.com.
I'll take your advice and minimise the amount of screens i have open at the one time. Thanks.

AFAIK all these mobile broadband services run on the 3 network, so regardless of whether it's vodafone, O2 or 3Mobile you're using, it'll be slow/crap until 3 improve things.

Mr.Plough: What difference would using PT or not make?If it's getting the HH's locally (i.e from a folder on your machine), then it shouldn't affect your connection whatsoever.

Ur right about the pt but not about all the newtorks piggybacking of the 3 network, 02 and vodafone have their own 3G network now as supposed to 3 only having a 3G network hense the name!!

As for the problems with 3 in limerick then you should try other networks like vodafoe (if when u test ur connection its bad) as there will be better coverage around your area (most likely).

Cheers for the helpful replies. I'll keep the cash low in my account until i get the broadband sorted out. Until then, I won't be heading for the $1-$2 tables!

The poor speed or latency that you are experiencing is quite normal for a wireless connection, also 3G wouldn't exactly have a significant backbone meaning that lots of users on the same mast spells trouble for speeds for everyone that's using it.

Your first port of call should be to call Three and tell them about your problem, there may be a problem with their mast that they aren't yet aware of. If the Three support offer no solution (and chances are they won't), you should look to trialing the services of Vodafone or O2 but bear in mind that wireless technology is still flaky to say the least and you will always experience the odd timeout at the worst possible moment!

Playing right now on Achill island using the vodafone data card with no conection issues... surprising... i'm only using the GPRS conection as there is no 3g available here.....

always seemed to have problems using the 3g service for poker as it had it's moments...but the gprs seems fine.. I was thinking of changing to the 3 service because fo the cost of the vodafone service but maybe I'll stay

I use a vodafone 3G modem when away from home and have not had any problems playing online. Having said that I wouldn't play if my connection was dodgy / up and down. I only play if I have a solid 2+ bars of 3G signal. Where I use it most I get that so it's as good as my cable connection at home.
