    Hi,

I've decided to go back and do my Leaving Cert Irish Higher Level. It's been 20 years since I did the Leaving Cert

Can anyone recommend a good off the shelf book & CD pack to help. I'm also looking at studying myself and getting grinds along the way.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Colin

A good starter book to get you back into it would be Teach Yourself Irish or the Turas Teanga course that was shown on TV a few years back. I saw the course book and CDs in Eason's not too long ago.

Failing that, watch TG4 and listen to RnaG more often.

Classes with Conradh na Gaeilge, if I had only one tip that would be it.

All leaving cert subjects have changed spectacularly and you will have to do all the subjects not just Irish on its discrete . And I would say is endeavour and get a student or someone to give you grinds in each subject you are considering of studying when you replicate the leaving cert . And try and get a discussion to a “Educational psychologist “who specialist in that grounds of area --- students above 19 years old ok best of luck , as for my self as a Doctor in Educational psychology I can’t comment on your behalf . And your leaning needs on less a full tests has been carried out

    If you would like to talk to me more ;

Dr. James Sinton just send a private message ok

i'd advise to go to a cuman na bhiann club near where your based. you can probable email them or phone them to find out times, closest one etc... it's only a few euro i think. it'd be mainly young kids/teenagers playing football and basketball, but you could just chat to the file(leader person) and it would improve your irish but is probably a bit childish but maybe worth the try.

I wouldnt recommend my leaving cert honours irish book (fuintás a haon & dó) it's a pain in the ass cause they havent enough english translations , and for the poetry that's essential to understand them if your not poetically inclined. www.skoool.ie have some alright stuff for the pros/poems part.

And listen to radio 1 and tg4 and them... i should have!

Cumarsáid is a really good book, it deals only with the oral part of exam. Every topic is split up into chapters, with people with horrible accents talking about each topic on the accompanying CD. At the back are the prose passages, you pick 5, your examiner randomly picks one of them for you to read.

Wouldn't recommend the Fiúntas's either. The other Irish book- Saibhreas maybe?

You can certainly repeat just one subject on its own.
For some people the Leaving is not all about college.

You will however have to pay a repeat fee, no matter how long it has been since you did your Leaving.

This might be of help for Irish:

The prescribed texts will be different this year.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I only need to resit Irish as I have the other qualifications required to go back to college for Primary School teaching.

Given that I'm concentrating on only one subject for the year I want to give it my very best shot and start straight away. Again thanks for the book and learning recommendations.
