I saw a PC reduced to €599 from €750 in Dunnes yesterday. I'm fairly sure its the one in this link.

    http://www.dunnesstores.ie/page.php?pid=8&section_id=32&sub_section_id=80&range_id=89&product_id=418&year=2007&month=8

Any thoughts? I'll basically use it predominantly for online poker so I don't need the most kickass PC going. Though i do want resolution of at least 1280 x1024+, I'm not sure what a 19" TFT monitor would give me.

I'm currently using Pentium1 Windows98  and its on its last legs so anything would be an improvement, but I don't want to buy it and then find out I could have got something twice as good for the same money.

    Cheers,
    ArmaniJ.

Spec wise, you would get a better spec of Dell for around the same money.

I.e. bigger harddriver, faster CPU, better gfx card.

TBH any bog PC will do what you want, Dunnes PC would do online poker no doubt, just check the montior before you buy to make sure its a half daent one. (get em to fire the machine up in store before you buy)

    o.0

I didn't think anyone still sold new machines with p4's in them. Avoid at all costs, it is seriously overpriced.

It's not good value for money whatever way you look at it, avoid...

Would you try your hand at making a custom build for yourself ?
Or get someone else to put it together to your custom spec ?

This way you'd build upgradability into the PC - unlike Dell, Compaq, etc where they make it awkward to upgrade.
And they'd have 8 MB RAM capacity on these motherboards.

    Chew it over.

How much realistically would people with the knowhow be looking for to put together a PC?

One think you have to remember if a custom build machine goes wrong, where can you turn?

    Negotiable - €150 to €200 tops, I'd say.

To the builder (Komplett or your local favourite) if it is a build error problem.
To the part manufacturer if it is a defective component - all components have manufacturer's warranty - but it will probably have to be referred by the builder.
