Urgh, I had a post typed up as to why I failed on so many levels tonight, but I lost it doing something stupid.
Anyways, here's the recovery of the salvage operation:

there pretty good for a "salvage job" --

    nos 1 and 5 are excellent --

number 3 looks v. similar to an album cover -- overall very good -- theres a lot of morrissey poses in there from george

You think these are alavage jobs.

    I hate www.'s on image's...

I say make the copywrite's stronger though.

    Are top class images.

Yep not bloody bad at all for salvages!

I take it this was the 'one lens gig'? Looks like you made the right choice.

Having seen some audience digisnap pictures of just how huge the whole thing was, I'm seriously impressed at these. You'd think he was in your local doing a few songs, the way they look...

Thanks folks, by salvage job, I mean there are loads more photos which I would like to have used, better framing, facial expression etc, but they were just too blurred.
I think I'm going to start using the Programmable mode on the camera from now on.
By the way, 6 photographers, only one smelly Canon user! ;)

    Just a couple nore here:

    Good pics.
Almost too good as they really show up how old and haggard the guy is!

So did you end up using both the 50mm and the 80-200mm?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,735 ✭✭✭mikeanywhere

    Was this from V2?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,154 ✭✭✭Oriel

Mike - no, solo show in the Odyssey, Belfast.
Rich, no, I just used the 80-200mm in the end, I wish I did have a wider lens though! Will definitely bring two camera next gig I shoot there.

Some great shots there well done. How far were you from the stage? And what was the lighting like for exposure/ISO?

I got some stick when I mentioned I bought his latest album.
My mates kind of looked at me ,like I had a gay agenda.

Have to say ,I think these are some of your best shots.
I think he's a great artist and you've caught him in a great light.

he's put on a bit of weight, bit pudgy round the cheeks, good shots

Corrected, thank you for your input.

As a "fan" (first gig I've been to - first gig he's ever played in Belfast), he put on a really great show. The highlight was Praying For Time, sang with only piano and strings.
Ignoring recent press, I respect the man a lot.
Anybody who can get that many gay men and hot women into the same room at the same time deserves a medal!

It was easily the most challenging gig I've been to photography-wise. I/we only had one song to shoot, and it was a dancey one, so he was moving about all over the place. Only one song, so no lens changing.
My main downfall, was (stupidly) shooting with matrix metering, rather than spot. It's the first time I've made that mistake, so another lesson learned for me.
I have another 20 shots which were better than those, but ruined due to blur.
And I would have had many more if it wasn't for being restricted to 80mm+.

I happily admit to my mistakes (so please tear these photos to shreds), and look forward to opportunities where I can make many more mistakes...

Sure they arent the sharpest on the planet but hey you know why it went tits up for you and next time will be different. Still think the two bodies scenario works well even in these situations.

Just out of interest Steve, why was it only one song for pics when its usually 3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,742 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

having sampled gig photography myself last night , i realise that it is a lot more difficult than it looks , to get right ! so well done again .

I could have stayed all night , but 2 or 3 songs were eneogh to shoot , theres only so much you can take .

Out of about 60 shots , i got one i liked , how many did you take in "that" song ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

You've ruined those shots with George Michael in them. If you're handy at photoshop you could remove him :p

    Salvage shots me arse.....grumble.....

If that is a dig then its a serious pot kettle black one. If not, no problem.

You know full well that I give you plenty of feedback on your work, all the time.

No idea! He probably just doesn't like photographers, which I can understand! The bigger the act, the less chance for photos, I've found.
thebaz, I took about 180 in all.
I'm tempted to post some of the duds! :p

    ...not a chance.

Some great photos there. I'd say he doesn't want more picts later in the gig since his makeup wears off and he really starts to show his age.

Well done with the picts though.

Nah, its more like he doesnt want to have the chance of losing power again!!!

Good stuff.. Hope this wasn't an MCD gig though...

Oh wait, I don't have to care anymore! Wooooooo! \o/

I think those are really good - I prefer the b.w ones myself. I think a slightly faster shutter speed may have frozen him a bit better but its hardly noticeable in the first two -still great shots composition and processing wise. Probably the best gig shots I have seen on here so far.

Well done, love no. 5 shot. I'd say it was hard enough to get the shots as he does move around the stage alot. You can only improve!! and looking forward to seeing them.
