How much a website is worth?

    Greetings,

I've recently been approached by an organisation who wish to buy one of my websites. What I'm curious is whether there is a list of websites which are sold (.ie's in particular) in Ireland, especially detailing what is the normal cost of purchase? Or whether there is a group who would specialise in this area?

It's simply the domain name that'll be sold, not the content. And yes, they are eligible to buy the domain name. As you can tell, I'm obviously new to this side of things :)

    Thanks,

    Dónal

There are dozens of stories where cyber squaters have made alot of money by registering a domain name of a company or person and then that company or person having to buy it back for X amount of €€€'s. Let them make you an offer for it, see how much they want that domain. Consult a solicitor. ;)

Indeed, that was the first thing I did but I'm looking just for some information if anyone has any lying around.

How much is the domain worth to you?

How much is the domain worth to them?

You won't find any public lists of IE domain sales, as there isn't a proper secondary market in them at present, which is due in no little part to the rules governing registration.

Yeah, that's kind of what I assumed it would come to.

    Thanks :)

Well if they're interested in the domain name, not the content, then what use will the content be to you. You'll essentially be moving home without telling anyone, and you will have to build up that domain name again.

As Blacknight said, you must analyse what is worth to all the different parties, in this case, yourself and another interested party. Remember to double check the SEO side of things too, not that it's important, but it will judge how good your website is performing at the present time.

    God Luck with your sale.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Google doesn't do a very good job of tracking .ie domains, so if the domain already has PR and backlinks it's unlikely to lose them in the short to medium term

the only tthing i remember about an .ie sale was a few years ago when a porn broker managed to buy ballybunion.ie when it expired, and had setup a porn site with that address, anyone who visited ballybunion.ie expecting the town and local area got a bit of a surprise. i think they had to pay a bit to get it back too.

That sounds highly unlikely as ballybunion.ie would be protected by the geographical rule i.e. it can only be registered to the local authority.

If it was the .com or other extension it would have been quite possible ...

I'm probably a bit late in replying to this post, but I was offered a few bob for one of my domains just yesterday www.dublindecking.net.

The only thing is, I have to get it valued by professionals. It cant be valued by bots. I did a bot evaluation on it last night and it said it was worth between 7,100 and 11,000 USD. I bought it for a tenner!

So i'm now going to get it valued by the pros, cost about 50 to 100 USD but it might be worth it, and if so, you can bet I will be buying domains left right and centre. Could be a profitable hobby.

But I do have a problem, I dont use a credit card. I only use laser, and cant find an apraisal company who will accept laser, if anyone knows can they pm me or post the details here.

    Thanks

This may be a valuation scam. The person supposedly interested in the domain recommends a valuation operation and sends an url supposedly of a discussion thread that rates the so called valuation firm highly.

At a guess, the domain is not worth anything close to that region. It is a .net and .net domains always sell for a fraction of the price of a .com. The bot you probably used to check the value was Leapfish. Its methodology, not to put too fine a point on it, sucks. Estibot ( http://www.estibot.com ) gives a more realistic valuation at $500 and that's being optimistic.

Are you talking about a website, or just a domain name?

It is parked on Sedo so I guess that it is just a domain name for sale rather than a developed site.

None of the appraisal companies are going to accept Laser, as it's only used in this country.

I'd recommend you get a credit card or even a 3v card

Your a superstar! i forgot about my 3V, been that long since I used it.

    Good man yourself

    Cheers.

JMCC: I had it for sale for 500 Euro, I didnt think it would be worth any more than that.

The only value on it is the business it is related to. Decking is big business in Dublin right now. I also own decks.ie and one or two others. I have one dot com, so might get that valued and see if it worth anything, although I have plans for it, but would be nice to know what its worth.

    Haha,
I read way too much about these things for my own good.

It is often reckoned that a website is worth 2 and 1/2 times the yearly income of advertising (or other commercial) revenue from operating the site, plus one 1/2 years revenue for every year a website has been operated. I'll explain if it doesnt make sense.

Remember though a .ie domain cannot be sold technically, only the entity behind it may change ownership... i.e. if it is registered to a business name, both domain and business name may be sold... they cannot be sold seperately... or atleast that was the case of one year ago.

    Regards,
    B
