I have only looked at ryanair website so far and it seems that I could fly to Bremen, Hamburg or Berlin and then take a train -

what is the handiest way to get to Hannover in Germany?

Berlin is about 1:40, Bremen 1 hour and Hamburg about 1:20 with the train.

Have a look at the DB site for train times and prices, ICE is the fastest train but costs more.

Bremen airport is very easy to get out of. The tram leaves from right outside and brings you to the main train station. Hamburg airport is also ok to get out of, there is a bus that can bring you to the local u-bahn and this will take you to the the main train station. There is also a bus that I think brings you to the main bus station which is next to the train station. Not sure about Berlin.

    Edit:
Just realised that you are flying with Ryanair. If that's the case then forget about Hamburg as it's over an hour with the bus from that airport (Lübeck) to the bus station in Hamburg. I would say go with Bremen.

Cheers for the great advice Jester - not booked any flights yet so not tied to Ryanair - Will look into Bremen more closely now before I book:)
