    hey guys
I currently have a g3 iBook which I know seems like a bit of an ancient crock but it suits me as I only really use it for photos and photoshop work (it has os 10.2.8). I was thinking of updating the os but i'm just wondering about the software that is already on it. Will the old software still work on a new os or would i be better off in updating the whole lot ie getting a new laptop aswell? also i don't have the original software on disk :o so would whatever is already on the computer still work?

umm......for the most part softwares are ok, as alot of mac apps are self contained.....just burn CD's full of the apps before you upgrade because i've found upgrading does nasty things.

Photoshop will be a problem though....its has a multitude of support folders and helper crap.

Personally, i'd stick with what you've got.

What model of iBook do you have? They started at 300Mhz, weather to bother to upgrade or not will depend on your existing spec.

You can try an upgrade from the OS X cd that you want to upgrade to. Like any upgrade it can mess things up, its much more effiecient than MS Windows upgrades though!

If you can, use carbon cloner to backup your drive in its entirity before upgrading.

Don't forget the old adage though, if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it!

    its a 600 mHz.
I wanted to upgrade it as I finad a lot of downloads require a newer OS.

There comes a time when there's only one real option. I'd upgrade. A photographer mate of mine had an iBook similar to yours and he used to go away and make tea while opening big images in PS. He picked up a lovely Black MacBook from the Apple refurb store and he just can't believe how fast it is.
