iD's next game: Rage

Quakecon is happening now, and various stuff is hitting the web, but here's a preview of iD's next game that they talked about there:

    http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/id-tech-5-project/810525p1.html
The point of the row of monitors is quickly explained: it's the new idTech5 demo running parallel on a Mac, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and it's hard to notice any differences between any of them. But before getting into the tech, we move to the PC box, where we boot up a special trailer for id Software's new game: Rage.

Focusing mostly on a canyon setting not far removed from what you'd associate with Motorsport, the trailer features both traditional first-person shooter action and outdoor off-road buggy racing. "We're obviously moving a little out of the id standard direction for titles here," Carmack says afterwards. "Gameplay wise, it is going to be about 50 percent run-and-gun, as people would sort of expect from us, but we've also got a significant amount of driving action in there. There's also the adventure component to this, where you build up your car and add things to it, so it's a very different type of game."

More at the link. One interesting detail - the game sports about 80GB of uncompressed data. It will ship on 2 DVDs on PC and 360, and 1 Blu-ray on PS3.

Where did you get the 2 DVD info from? No where else has mentioned that.

While id maintained its typical stance that the title will ship "when it's done," the company did reveal that the PlayStation 3 edition of Rage will arrive on one Blu-ray disc, whereas the other three versions--PC, Mac, Xbox 360--will come on two DVDs with a potential Blu-ray distribution for PC and Mac.

I wonder how big it will be to install. Maybe the first Blu-ray game on PC too?

Just saw the video. Looks really good. A bit of Motorstorm about the vehicle bits, yeah, but the run-and-gun stuff looked really sweet graphically.

If the pick up rate for DVD as the default distribution for PC is anything to go by I doubt there will be a blu ray version, and even if there is, it will be alot fewer then dvd versions.

Sure, I'd expect any BD PC version to be a small minority of the distributed discs. They've haven't said for sure they'll do it, just thinking about it. It's not exactly a critical thing on the PC since you're only really dealing with the discs at install time.

Just finished watching the keynote, interesting stuff. Talks about the huge amounts of data they generate, already many multiples of what they are doing with the first iteration of the technology in Enemy Territory. Also talks quite a lot about mobile platforms, and a "porting up" philosophy which Carmack seems to prefer. He also mentioned there'll probably be a Quake Arena game using this new tech. It'll be made by the team currently doing Quake Zero once they're finished with it.
