Filled car up last night (2003 1.6 VW Golf) at Tescos, started the car up and Exhaust emissions warning light came on continuously. It has hever been on before. What might cause this and what are the fixes? Is it OK to continue driving the car for now?

    Thanks.

Did you fill the car right up to the brim?

Yeah, filled to the neck. IS this significant?

BTW It's a borrowed car, I normally drive a (diesel) passat and haven't seen such a warning before.

Filling to the brim (overfilling) can trigger the emissions light. Basically the car has a system which prevents petrol vapours from entering the atmosphere. Too much petrol in the filler neck can cause petrol to enter the evaporation system and trigger the light. Best off to stop filling once then pump cuts out.

Ive had this problem with 1.4 golf, the induction(?) coil on one of the cylinders could be gone, this regulates the fuel entering the cylinder and as a result the engine is running rich (which is why the emissions light is on). They're pretty cheap to replace and only take 20 mins or so, once the broken coil is identified.

Ive had awful problems with them going, had to get 6 coils replaced in 2.5 years, mechanic said theres nothing u can do to prevent this happening

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm expecting (hope) the light goes out on its own accord soon :(

It may, then again, you may need to hook up a diagnostics computer to erase the fault memory. Wait a while just in case it does go out of it's own accord.
