FTA satellite set-up...No CBeebies

    Hi All,

Am new to this board, thought I'd sign up 'cus it's full of braniacs!!:)

Would anyone have any ideas on how to get CBeebies?

I got a Fortec Star Beta STB with a 65cm dish from Maplins. Set it up for what it lists on the settings as 'astra2/eurobird'. The Tp frequency automatically sets itself to 10803H 2200, LNB is set to universal. Have got good signal strength (90%+ and quality in the 50% region), it shows 'BER' (haven't got a clue what this is!) at approx 44%. All bars are in green and shown as 'active'.

I've got ITV, UTV, BBC 1, Tiny Pop + other crap.

Before my 2 year old shreeks me to an early grave, where is CBeebies? All the literature and saw before buying said ALL BBC channels were FTA, or do I have a dud. :(

Do I have the wrong satellite? There's no mention of Astra2 A,B,C etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    scan transponder freq 10773 H 22000 5/6
    Its there.
Do a blind scan or auto scan to update your receiver. If it doesnt pick up this automatically then it probably is missing this transponder from its list.
So enter the details above and scan transponder manually

Or do a scan with Network Search (NIT) enabled.

And check that the channel is due to be on the air at the time.

    I couldn't get BBC3 and BBC4 until I realised that I had to wait until after 7pm.

    Well spotted, 7am to 8pm
And dont forget CBBC, CITV and a few others I cant remember.
Between the 4 of us you will be sorted.
And if you are still having trouble I'll get my 2yr old to pm your 2yr old and and sort it out themselves. Leave out the  middlemen

    Hi Gang,

    Hope everyone is well?

I tried the blind scan and manual scan of 10773, but to no avail. The transponder list shows freq 10773 H 22000 5/6.

I did notice that when I scan 10773 the quality, signal strength and BER (?) bars are registering high values (same as other working channels), but stay coloured red. Rather than green & yellow as on other transponders that are working ok.

Does the dish position need tweaking or is there another reason?

I really appreciate the help, as a newbie it's a steep learning curve.

My 2 year old has discovered the on/off switch, not surprising as it's a very shiny (& obvious) chrome button that makes a lovely click. So any testing and tuning now takes a while longer:rolleyes:

    Many thanks,

    Rich:D

BER is bit error rate. It's more or less the inverse of quality and should be as small as possible, somewhere around 1 x 10^-3 or 1 x 10^-4. I've not seen BER expressed as a percentage before, but 44% does seem quite high and 50% seems low for quality.

Have you skewed (twisted) the LNBF? See point 7:

You might need to skew the lnb a small bit, standing in front of dish, turn lnb clockwise and watch quality band on your menu.

    Hi Folks,

Still no BBC 3 or 4 after 1900 or CBeebies before that. I tried searching specifically for tp 10773 H 2200 5/6, inc entering the details manually. No joy, it scans the tp's either side and find signals but nothing on 10773. It lists it as being searched but flashes past/ through it in about literally 2 seconds.
I've tweeked the LNB and picked up about 10% quality, with no change on strength at about 50% and BER about 40%.

    Any other ideas?

is the LO set to universal

Galaxie390, not sure if what you wrote above is a typo but the symbol rate should be 22000 and not 2200 this would explain the poor quality.

Can you report back the Signal, Quality and BER readings for 2 transponders for comparison purposes?

    10714, H, 22000, 5/6
    10773, H, 22000, 5/6

It might help us figure out what's wrong.

Can you get any of the "H" transponder channels?

Looking at the list of channels you say you have got, all of them look like Vertical transponder channels

My uncle had a problem a few months ago, lost BBC2 overnight, turned out his LNB wasn't switching properly so none of the channels on the Horizontal transponders could be got.

He replaced the LNB (after checking for bad connections and trying out a spare receiver), problem solved!

It is possible that this fault can be caused by a faulty receiver as the polarisation switching is controlled by dc voltage supplied by the receiver. 12.5v to 14.5v gives vertical and 15.5 to 18v gives horizontal polarisation. Not enough voltage because of a fault in the receiver and you can't switch to horizontal.

    Hi Folks,

Thank you all for the prompt responses!

First off, Bridan, I'm fairly sure my '2200' was a typo, but will double check.

Secondly, Conax, again I'm fairly sure 'LO' is set to universal, but I'd better check that also.

Brightspark & Zaphod, am away in sunny Cork for the weekend. Will try your suggestions on Monday.

What a great place this forum is. Thanks again al of you.:)

    Hi Folks,

    Success!!!:D

After triple checking all the values and settings, I did a chance TP search on 10773. Straight away it picked up CBeebies and few others I was missing.

For the life of me I couldn't figure out what I'd done differently as I'd gone thro' exactly the same procedure as before.

Then it clicked, as I'd got home earlier than usual I'd done the search at 1700instead my normal 2000 or later. So I reckoned the CBeebies channel must go off air early evening as mentioned in a previous post.

I'm still a bit puzzled though, as CBeebies becomes BBC3 after 1900 I think. So why couldn't I get the signal before as I was searching for the tp and not just CBeebies?

    Thanks everyone for your help!

If you do a scan after 7pm youll get "BBC4" if you do the scan before 7pm youll get "Cbeebies"

Effectively its the same channel anyway

Some FTA boxes will find and name find 2 channels separately when searching for cbeebies wheres some will only find one channel...this is often the case when looking for ITV4 in the morning you will often find CITV...

Congrats on finally getting it sorted...hopefully it will keep the kids quite for an hour or 2 lol
