I got a sample of Clarins Beauty Balm Flash the other day, and so far have been far from impressed with it. It seems to make my skin look unhealthily shiny and my make-up doesn't seem to be lasting as long as usually does with it underneath.

If I'd never heard of it before I wouldn't have been as disappointed, but since it's got such a great reputation I was pretty surprised at how mediocre it is.

So name and shame folks: have you ever been surprised at the crapness of an overhyped product?

Welcome to my world! I'm a marketers dream...always buy these products and then go "why did i waste my money on this rubbish". - biggest waste was creme de la mer. It was cr@p!

LOL. Good point, although they do add a certain air of mystery to the wearer...otherwise everything would be out in the open...no surprises! :D

Beauty Flash balm - overrated for sure, but their beauty flash balm eye cream is good!

The Body Shop do a better version of Touche Eclat.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream - overrated - Neem Cream or Aloe Vera is miles better.

    Mac foundation is overrated.

`doesnt cost a lot but remember the fuss when johnsons gradual tanner came out? You couldnt get it for love or money, I tried it and ended up all streaky...

actually I think I could put all self tan in this category

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 123 ✭✭BreeVdK

Bought Beauty Flash Balm a while back due to the amount of hype continuously in magazines etc and I was totally unimpressed with it.
I put it on (after exfoliating) and after it dries in, if I rub my face, skin (and I suppose the dried in cream) starts to peel off !!!

The same happens if I use Johnson's Baby Pink Body Moisturiser. It smells lovely but peels !!

I also think Johnson's self-tan is crap, descry, the same thing happened to me !

Rimmel mascaras are rubbish as are the lipsticks.

I recommend Guinot Gommage as an exfoliator - AMAZING and Body Shop Body Butters !

any shampoos and conditioners that promise to make your hair anyhow different. remember my hairdresser saying - don't be expecting miracles from them!

Over the counter teeth whitening kits are another big disappointment.

And bikini waxing kits - there is no way one can inflict such a pain by oneself!!!

Maybeline mascara in the pink and green tube. Hyped as the BEST MASCARA EVER.

But it's pretty much like every other chemist bought mascara.

Yep! Though the rest of their mascaras are good, just that they're impossible to get off!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭Electric

Clinique foundation is crap. It cakes on and it smells!!!

Tresemme shampoo and conditioner is rubbish. It was billed as being professional hairdresser's choice, but all it did was leave my hair greasy and dull!

Home waxing kits are a joke!

I know it's not exactly a product but epliators are completely ridiculous!! Expensive and have the same effect as you sitting there for hours plucking hairs from your legs with a tweezers!

In the ad for that mascara in tiny print down the bottom it says "filmed using lash inserts" so the lashes it'll give you are nothing like what the ad shows!

Most benefit stuff i bought was a waste of money. i went through a big phase of it. Especially he body/bath stuff. It's just more expensive cos it's in very funky packaging but now I have shelves of funky looking stuff that I never use. It's not cheap either.

I'd have to disagree about the Touche Eclat - it works a wonder for me.

Big let downs for me are Johnson's Holiday Skin and Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturiser and Tresemme shampoos. Utter waste of my moolah.

I'd have to disagree, MAC's kohl liner is gorgeous and lasts all night and their lipsticks keep your lips moisturised and don't dry out like other ones. I'm a big MAC fan, their colours are amazing!

i think that benefit stuff defo is a waste of money big time!!!its pure crap!!touch eclat is alright it lasts forever like so its good in that sense but i wouldnt say it makes me look more awake!!

Johnnson's fake tan moisturiser was a big disappointment. The tan is not a nice colour and it streaks ways too easily. Olay and Nivea are fab though. The Dove one gives me pimples.

Also, expensive face moisturiser, thus any you can buy in BT. I once bought one thinking it would be really great for the skin. Big mistake. It's back to basics there.

Various volumising mascaras. They just go sooo clumpy. Especially that one from L'Oreal which comes in a funny shape and has two sides. The mascara side has a comb like applicator. Soooooo bad!!!

Special Eye Make up removal lotions. I've tried several and finally tried that clinique one that has two parts. You shake it before usage in order to mix the two fluids. Still woke up the next morning with panda eyes. I now use water, soap (Dove!) and a flannel to get off most of it and then swipe with vaseline over the eye to get the last resedues and moisturise the area. Never had panda eyes in the morning again.

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Shampoo. My hair was greasy again the same evening. Yuck! Their shine shock for brunettes is fab though.

I'm sure there's loads more that I just forgot at the moment. But different things work well for different ppl. Nothing saves you the trouble of trying it out yourself, unfortunately.

just reading the posts about the flash beauty balm and i am wondering if people are using it right

firstly it is not a moisturiser as such, dont use it the way you would a moisturiser

the way i have been told to use by clarins people is

put some on your skin, dont rub it in, pat it on so it is sitting on your skin then put your foundation over it when your skin is still 'wet'

i have used it in the past and found it fantastic for making me look awake and really fresh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,096 ✭✭✭LadyMayBelle

Gotta say I LOVE the Mac eyeliner, works a treat..but only the engraved type..smoulder is rubbish..it smudges when you so much as blink and is so hard to remove..really despise it. Also hate the Johnsons tanning cream..but i have started using their new one, which they market as their must subtle glow yet and like it..no more streaks and its actually a nice glow for pale people like me!it does take ages to dry like the original one(which really annoys me,anyone else?) but i would highly recommend giving the new one a go.
And lastly for most overrated,it has to be for me Oil of Olay. sapped every last ounce of moisture out of my skin. and secondly Dermalogica Pre Cleanse..feels lovely going on but destroys skin and leaves red itchy skin after use!

:mad:ahhhhhhhhhh This shampoo gave me dantrough :p(sorry dont know how to spell) :p It totally dried out my hair and left my scalp so itchy and flakey never again....

;)Sunshimmer so UNDER-RATED it is so fantastic.. I have been through the works with false tans and this is bye far the best... One fault is that white or cream clothes are destroyed by the end of the night but washes straight out...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 86 ✭✭kelly1979

agreed that sunshimmer is the best fake tan the only thing with it is if it rains your SCREWED!!

I totally disagree with Touche Eclat being the same as High Beam!!! Both can be used as a highlighter but Touche Eclat is also a concealer and a fantastic one at that if you ask me!!! I sometimes wonder if people are using these things correctly!!
Any shampoo off the shelf in a chemist have dissapointed me!!! I always get my shampoo's and conditioners from salon supplies now as my hairdresser explained to me that all regular shampoos have sulfates which strip your hair of it's colour and natural oils. Conditioners bought off the shelf have animal bi-products that don't actually moisturize your hair, they just coat the hair, which eventually builds up and makes your hair heavy, greasy and dull looking!!! Tres Semme claims to be a salon shampoo... unfortunately it's not!!
Best fake tan I have used is 'Top Image' formally known as 'Euro Tan', I don't use fake tan anymore but there's no way I would use sun shimmer!!!! It's difficult to apply because it dries in too quickly, it soaks into the palms of your hands and you can't get it off!!!! It goes a sort of green colour as the night goes on and when you wash your hands after going for a pee you have white hands!! Oh and If it rains your rightly f**ked!!

touch eclat - great until someone takes a pic of you with a flash and you have racoon bright circles under your eyes!

simple products and nivea products - my skin reacts as if ive used sand paper on my face

Mac concealer and foundation - did nothing for me

johnsons body moisturoiser - awful stuff st tropez everyday while dearer is much better

Ruby and millie eyeshadow - expensive but lasts no time at all on your eyes and impossible to build up a good colour

loreal french manicure set - how on earth the special brush for the white bit is meant to be easier than a normal one is beyond me!

pantene shampoo - bye bye hair colour, hello greasy roots

all home waxing kits - i was left with wax stuck to my legs which then gathered fluff from my trousers so my legs looked hairier!

sunshimmer - ruins your light coloured clothes, runs in the rain, smudges if you sweat and makes your hands a minging shade of orange. am shocked people use this!

Too faced lip injection - makes your lips sting like hell, then makes them bigger but dries the hell out of them hmmmm

Dove products - all of them, they make my skin peel eek! and besides the advertising gets on my wick. while other products won't make me look like a young hot model id rather take that illusion that one of products that use the phrase 'curvy' and 'real women'. Lets face it if people were so happy being what they naturally look like would they be using beauty products?

    Touch eclat is rubbish
Estee lauder advanced night repair- 8 hours sleep in a bottle??I dont think so.

Honestly,Ive tried most 'cult' products and many are useless.I think the beauty companies must pay the magazines a serious amount of money to be put on these lists.
Also dont be swayed by the 'product of the year' red labels you see on many products. Each company has to pay 50grand to get onto the voting shortlist. Its a complete scam and is dominated by the wealthiest beauty companies.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 410 ✭✭flynnc8

all those dissing sun shimmer are mad...

Gives you orange hands - buy an application glove.. no orange hands...

Runs in the rain- out the front door into a taxi, out of the taxi into the club... not much chance of it getting smudged...

Ruins light coloured clothing - No arguement however it does come straight out in a standard wash...

Turns Green as the night goes on - lol ha ha ha you must have a funny reaction to it.. I'm using sunshimmer over 3 years and have never had this problem..

    Sorry peeps I'm a deadicated sunshimmer lover:p

I think Clarins Beauty Flash Balm is great if you have dry skin, my sister swears by it, but for me with oily/combination skin, it just created an oil slick after an hour!

Have to disagree with those that dissed Touche Eclat, I find it great for covering dark circles and spots without leaving you with a 'caked' look that you get a lot with concealers.

I think with all these 'wonder products' you have to buy them with realistic expectations and not expect miracles.

Have to say I have hated every Lancome and Chanel foundation I have ever bought and also all the Lancome mascara's. Always end up returning to my trusty Clinique!

Clinique 3 step products - the toner smelt like alcohol and took a layer of skin off my face and the dramatically different moisturiser made my skin look greasy.

Maybelline XXL 2 Step Mascara - the white stuff just stuck like goo on my eyelashes and wouldnt come off!

Tresemmé Shampoo and Conditioner - made my hair greasy

Aussie Shampoo and Conditioner - made my hair greasier

Herbal Essences - my hair looked like it hadnt been washed in a week

All heat protection sprays. I've yet to find one that works.

Benefit Dr Feelgood...like wtf?! A friend recommended it. Never listening to her advice again! Benefit stuff in general is just fancy packaging.

Johnson's tanning moisturiser...makes me look yellow. Not orange, not tanned: yellow. Hate self-tanning products in general. I'm Irish, I'm not supposed to be bronze. Pale, Irish skin ftw!

Nivea - worst moisturisers ever. Makes my skin so oily and I have pretty dry skin.

On the other hand products I swear by:
    - Simple products - cleanser, toner, moisturiser, facial wipes...what ever. I hate lotions and potions that have any sort of a scent so love the fact that this line doesn't.

    - Max Factor masterpiece mascara. I have it in black. I have it in black/brown. Enough.

    - Sephora make up brushes. Unfortunately not available in Ireland.

yeah...sunshimmer would be so handy. i have a bottle of it upstairs and i only really wear false tan when im goin out...but i cant bring myself to wear it because for one thing, a drink comes near you you're buggered. and also...it wipes off onto your clothes FAR too easily. i just think ya get what ya pay for. it could be good but its too risky for me anyway...

Yeah, they're obviosly not using it right. It says to apply your make - up IMMEDIATELY after you apply it. You're not suppposed to rub your skin for a few hours after it because it can also be used as a FACE MASK.

It's NOT supposed to be a moisturiser in the first place just brightens up the skin's apperance and in my opinion helps allot to blend my make - up. Def in my 10 ten beauty products for the skin.
It makes my skin very soft and brightens my face up in the morning thats why I love it.
