Ok, so i used to be a big Ray D'Arcy man, but i think that was because i used never actually get to listen to him, but now that i'm working i can listen everyday, by god does it get stale quickly...

In general I'll just have today FM on if listening to the radio, I like Matt Cooper on the Last Word, don't mind Tom Dunne either...

I rarely listen to 2FM, unless there's nothing on...

I'm in Cork, so there's only really crappy local stations (Red FM & 96/103 FM, terrible) so I don't listen to them...

Newstalk gets a listen sometimes, primarily off the ball which is quite good...

And i might throw on Lyric FM when i'm heading off to bed, nice & soothing...

But really i don't particularly have a fav. DJ, but today fm would be the fav. station alright...

My fav DJ is Tom Dunne! His voice is so sexy......mmmmmmm!!! Favourite radio station is probably Spin though cos there's less sh*te talk on it!

Favorite DJ is one of Tom Dunne/ Ray Foley/ Sean Moncrief. My favorite station is Today FM or Country Mix 106.

Favourite stations : Phantom FM and Newstalk and then Today FM.
...and also Premier FM during its temporary licence runs.

Why? Phantom is the station that plays the kind of music I tend to like - alternative rock and other bits and pieces of rock sometimes too. Don't get me wrong: I do like other forms of music too, but I am not satisfied with what the other stations have to offer in terms of music. I also find the obvious enthusiasm of the deejays for what they are playing infectious too. The station has just a very fresh approach to broadcasting.

Newtalk - for its take on current affairs and news - I never was really a great fan of Radio 1 (although it has its moments).

Today FM - for its general style but particularly for "The Last Word" and "Pet Sounds". Since the above 2 stations have been licenced, it has dropped down in frequency of listening for me.

Premier FM - for playing such a wide range of oldies - many of which had not been played for years. Memories and all that!

Favourite djs/broadcasters - tough one that. At the moment, I would say Phantom's "Music Master" John Caddell, presenter of probably my favourite program Bedrock. He speaks clearly and acknowledges e-mails and text messages, while having that Phantom enthusiasm for music. Also, its a program where you are likely to hear a good sprinkling of rock (and even adult pop) classics thrown in.
Also : Sinister Peter in the mornings for his easy-going whacky style of Canadian patter. Also: Jack Hyland in the evenings for his acute sense of humour. And finally for the moment with Phantom: Simon Maher in the afternoons - always bristling with enthusiasm and he has some interesting discussions about various topics. His show is partly talk. Sadly, I would normally not be able to hear Simon.

On the non-Phantom side: Matt Cooper for his excellent presenting of "The Last Word" on Today FM : he seems to have a grasp of every topic under the sun and an interest in many areas. Although I seldom hear him, I do like the sound of 2FM's John Clarke's voice and he has a great knowledge of music.
Likewise seldom heard, I have always enjoyed listening to Declan Meehan of East Coast FM and Today FM.

Personally my favourite stations are 2fm and Sipn1038.

    My fave dj's are:
On Spin Joe and Keith and James Davids.
98fm's morning crew are good and Brian McColl as well.
Nikki Hayes and Dave Redmond on 2fm are brill.
    Also Andy Clarke on lmfm.

My Favourite Dj is The Ace with the Pace.. Jason Maine. Its the only time you'll find me listening to Q102. A true legend who should be on overnights on a national rather than a crappy computer.

Favourite station at the moment is hard to choose. I mostly listen to BBC R1 or London's Magic 105.4 (ch 0180 on Sky).

Oh so that's where he's ended up. I remember him being on the overnight shift on FM104 and couldn't stand him and his cheesy drawl.

Someone else mentioned Joe and Keith on Spin but these two really need to realise that not only can they not do comedy, they can't do accents either!

Favorites for me these days would be Jim Jim and Colm on 2FM (with the exception of those STUPID PJ Gallagher calls where he rings some place in the UK and puts on this stuttering whiny accent - it's the same "joke" every time and it wasn't funny the first time I heard it either ), followed by George Hook on Newstalk (whose coverage in general is good I find).

I don't think that Joe and Keith are particularly humorous. They do have some humorous moments. I still think their shows are good.

Of what I've heard of Colm and Jim-Jim which is basically whatever's stuffed into a saturday morning those PJ Gallagher calls were among the funnier parts I thought!

Radio na Life on 106.4fm is fantastic at nights. Great trance and techno.

Also I like the breakfast show on NewsTalk and the last word on Today FM.

    Pete Tong, Radio 1
His cockney patois epitomises what this show is all about for me, you can hear his passion for what he's doing, he doesn't have any incessant banter, stupid listener text opinions, "humourous" side kicks or other such annoyances on his show.He plays the newest, fresh, top tunes every friday evening and has done so consistently for nearly 17 years, most of which I've been tuning in for, he isn't afraid to play unusual stuff and sometimes aspires to doing so and for me just defines what a radio DJ should be, especially for someone in his late 40's....he's an excellent club DJ too, but I'd rate him as a better radio jock.

I'm sorry, there are no Irish radio DJs that I would even consider placing as my favourite; I can't think of anyone I'd go out of my way to re-tune to (unless one of their conunterparts was particulalry annoying me.
Similarly I have little but contempt for national radio, which for me represents a huge excercise in same-y blandness interspersed with crappy adverts and narrated by some of the most annoying people in the country.
Phantom gfets an honourable mention if for no other reason than trying to diversify; I'm not a big fan of their musical mainstay, can't really isten to their jocks, but I'll still give them respect for trying to change from the usual bullsh*t...

thank frig somebody else said it; i find myself shouting 'you're not funny, you tiresome cnut' at the radio when one of those hi-hi-hilarious calls comes on. I genuinely think that the lads are funny guys, and they play well off each other, but yeah, the PJ Gallagher 'fnorty fnor' schtick really gets on my wick.

on the OTHER hand, the time when the two lads were pulling the 'on hold' trick with yer wan that ran the flower shop, it was hilarious...

Agree completely the best radio dj anywhere. With regard to Irish radio, Tom Dunne is ahead of the posse. However nothing is as depressing as Dave Fanning on a Friday night or that 80's music show on Todayfm.

I'm going for the unpopular option here by stating my admiration for Gerry Ryan. I really like his show. Matt Cooper's The Last Word is pretty good too but I find his interviews/debates are too short. I have no favourite radio station, as I think they all suck.

Same. We're probably the only two people here that like listening to him.

I think that 80s show is the best show on Today FM and was ay better than anything on 2FM at the same time on a Friday night. Change of presenter to Philip Cawley was the best thing to happen to it even though "Timbo" was on it last night.

It passed many a Friday evening driving up the M1 for me.
    Long may it last! :)

best programme is off the ball on newstalk and also liveline on rté 1

Matt Cooper, he knows his stuff and doesn't talk crap, Today FM, apart from a couple of hours a day i always have it on.

Phil Cawley todayfm, just like his silly wit and chat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭opa01_2000

    Matt Cooper is very good.

    Ray D'Arcy has become stale.

Ray Foley has to be the worst - so unfunny but still thinks he's hilarious. Interaction between him and JP, particularly reviewing films, is excruciating. When the kids go back to school watch the number of listeners drop and then surely Today FM have to find someone else for the lunchtime slot.

Ray Foley on TodayFM. He had a much better show at night, but his afternoon slot is good to.

    Ray Foley hands down.

I'm a today fm man myself, Ray Foley & JP double act at the moment, you kinda feel like they're your mates down the pub really.. intentional cheese work for me, though the pop playlist can get stale quick, prefer the rockier side... ray d'arcy following up, almost feel like we've grown up with the man.. bumped into him at a Maeve Higgins gig last year, nearly expected him to know me.....
Cooper and Dunne are good too, but Tony fenton and Phil Cawley are pure radio cheese, god help them... smashy and nicey style.. they remind me of the Maccadees eurosaver ad... this is how much work a dj has to do to earn enough for a eurosaver burger...cue ridiculously cheesey Dj laugh

Can't listen to Anne Marie Kelly tho at all...

my favourite station , couldnt say
favourite dj , before they changed to a different slot , i would have said will leahy and sports guy on the saturday show , i dont get to hear them much now on there drive time slot
another dj i like and this may surprise many is maxi who is on really early before morning ireland and at weekends and holidays, she plays a really eclectic mix and is warm without being too chirpy like the unbelievabley annoying high priestess of chirpiness ruth scott

still ruth is not the worst on radio , that honour goes to the unlistenable afternoon guy on 2fm , rick o shea

Matt Cooper is my No. 1. Guess I'm getting old, I prefer talk radio to music.

I listen to Moyles on BBCR1 every morning, online, then Jo Whiley.

I think Moyles is hilarious, and his crew too (he was saying something the other morning about Dempsey slagging him off on his show? Anyone know what happened there?).

In the afternoon I'll stick on a bit of Joe Duffy for the hilarity of outraged Irish housewives, or maybe Moncrief, depending what I'm in the mood for.

I used to be a Hook fan, but switched to Cooper on Today FM for the journey home.

Then Off the Ball on Newstalk for the evening stint

Honourable mention for Ann Marie Kelly, who along with Dunne and Cooper, is one of TodayFM's only listenable presenters.
Been back working the early mornings in Dublin and her selection of music and distinct lack of inane bullsh*t and banter is a breath of fresh air to get me down the M1....such a shame that bollocks Dempsey has to waddle in and spoil it at 7...
Someone should give her a decent daytime slot...

Tom Dunne/Matt Cooper on Today FM
    and
    Sean Moncrieff on Newstalk 106

Ray Foley is absolutely hilarious, he does what he likes and doesn't give a crap about the consequences

Oh, and Today FM is by far the best station. Gift Grub, Ray Foley, Premiership all day Saturday...

Station: Today FM, although been enjoying Phantom a bit lately
Presenters: Tom Dunne, Ian Dempsey, Matt Cooper

I don't listen to the radio much outside the times those guys are on, but generally what I've heard is the usual generic rubbish.
