This is what I bought http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xbox360/xbox360customize.htm

    Console
Wired Controller ( am looking for cheap wireless controller or the dog is going to strangle himself ( or me him)
    Composite AV Cable

Doesn't have hard drive but I have a PS3 so this is just cause it was so cheap.

Rumour is the Core is being discontinued quite soon, so this is probably why there's a price cut.

Considering it's a €100 price drop on the launch price of a Core it's pretty damn good - you could buy the HDD for around €100 and then the only real difference between the core and the premium would be the wireless controller - but you'd be making a saving of €110 even after buying the HDD.

    Very tempted myself.

can u play online with a core system?and if i bought wireless controllers separately, would they work + would a memory card suffice to play games i bought online?say pro evo 6?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,267 ✭✭✭mcgovern

Yes you can play online with just the Core, obviously you need a memory card if you want to save anything but there is no problem playing online without the HDD.
Microsoft also confirmed that they are not going to discontinue the core, most likely with the price drop coming up in the States, they are going to try and use it to compete with the Wii's price point.

You'll need a memory card to save account details, but yeah, you can play online with the core.

That said, you will be limited in what you can do online - for example you won't be able to fit marketplace games on one memory card.

More importantly you'll not be able to download the patches to make original Xbox games work on the 360 - so great online games like Halo2 won't be available to you.

Considering the fact that a 64MB memory card costs around €35 and a 20GB X360 HDD costs €99 I'd recommend you save up and get the HDD - you'll probably fork out for one eventually and your machine will be a bit crippled until you do IMO. (You could also wait for the 120GB Elite HDD which will cost you a fair bit more but is obviously a fair bit bigger - you probably won't need it for the most part, though.)

The patch to make the original xbox games work on 360 can be applied using a cd-r.

That's just for those without their 360 connected to the Internet. You'd still need a hard drive to save the patch to wouldn't you?

My Mistake - just going by the general RRP... still for what you're getting I think the HDD is the best value.

A terrible price for 64 megs; an excellent price for the memory card! :D

    Hi all,

I'm sure this has been done to death but does anyone know where the best 360 deal is these days?

    Thanks in advance!

    Muiriosa

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

I bought one a couple of weeks back, and I found Xtravision had the best value deals (assuming you want the Premium version). A lot depends on what games you want with it, as they can make or break an offer.

Smyths are usually the other retailer with good deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 458 ✭✭Xaniaj

Thanks for that, The Atheist. Although, tbh, I'll prob just end up buying a Core system as there won't be much online play.

If you mean you won't be online at all, then ok - but you'd want a HDD for demo's and trailers assuming you'll be able to go online to the Marketplace. Also, you need to have either a HDD or a memory card for saving games.

Core system for €199 at 3G stores according to this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055128212&referrerid=59211

The 360 recently got a price cut in America... but Microsoft gave a concise, abrupt answer to questions about a reduced price in the PAL territories:

"This announcement was specifically around pricing in the US. We have not announced any pricing changes in Europe."

    /waves miniature American flag.

If I were you I'd wait. The 360 Elite will be arriving soon and looks like a much better machine than the Core/Premium models.

Its basically the same in black with a bigger hdd? He doesn't need a hdd so why would he buy that? Yes it will have HDMI but so will the premiums soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Dublinstiofán

If you have an old console (PS2, DS or PSP) to trade in gamestop do the 360 premium for €199 in "the big deal". Otherwise think Xtra-vison have the best package.

    Good luck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,829 ✭✭✭KerranJast

Yeah I actually went and checked the latest info and that's pretty much it. It was supposed to have a newer 65nm CPU with better & quieter cooling which would prevent the ring of death but that's been cut. Not worth it so.

Merged with a recent thread as it seems to come up often.

I have heard that the elite will be better designed to overcome the problems that the current 360's have with overheating. I'm going to wait before i get a 360, because they appear to me to be too unreliable at the minute and i'm not willing to take the risk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,530 ✭✭✭patch

In fairness there's not a lot of risk.
If something goes wrong it will be replaced in all likelihood.
I have a launch console with no issues whatsoever.
Many more people on here have similar stories.
Not a lot of people have the self control to 'wait a while' but each to their own I suppose.

I agree, but for a different reason. The launch of a new upgraded premium product sometimes makes the standard model cheaper. ;) Hold out for that bargain XBox!

any of these left as the site still says 360 ero with a "free" game and does it apply to all stores?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

Did some scouting around today, and by far the best deal I can find is:

    XBOX 360 "pro" system
    +Forza 2
    +Gears Of War
+One of the following games: Superman Returns, Need for Speed Carbon, Tiger Woods 2007, God Father, Fantastic Four Rise of Surfer, NBA 2k7 or Prey.
    +Play&Charge kit
    +2 x €5 vouchers
    +Loyalty card
    All for €399.99

    This was in Smyths.

Gamestop are doing an offer where if you trade in your old console + 6 games, you get an XBOX premium for €200, but I'd have to buy the Forza 2, play & charge, gears of war seperately and I'd lose my PS2 so it's a no-go for me.

What I want is Forza 2, another game (Gears of war is getting good reviews) and a second controller as well as play and charge kit. This seems to be as close as I can get and looks to be great value.

    Can anyone beat this?
Also, where's the best place to buy a second controller?

Merging these together because it comes up often.

GAME on Dawson St. have already reduced their prices and they are selling the Pro for €359, so sticking an extra €10 onto their cut:mad:

Smyths is the best deal by far.

Xtravision are selling the premium for €359.99 this friday and you get Blue Dragon for free and €20 worth of vouchers. Its in todays Star if anyone wants to know about it!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

Smyths are selling the pro for €349 from friday with 2 free games.

I got my xbox last night. Started it up and it was already broken. Awesome. Got it replaced and the new one works - hurrah.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,850 ✭✭✭Fnz

The cheapest I could find (delivery included in price):

Official XBox 360 Wired Controller: €28

Official XBox 360 Wireless Controller (black): €38.15

    - the same site has the white wireless controller but it works out dearer due to differing delivery costs.

It took me a full day to post this - couldn't connect to the boards website for some reason.

Another offer in the shops here:
Got a very good deal on a xbox 360 premium in gamestop limerick came with halo 3,blue dragon, king kong and with second wireless controller and viva pinta and forza 2 included €399 the lot

    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055199696

68euro more, but an extra wireless controller, and 4 extra games (probably not great games)

Depends what you're after i guess.

    how does ibood work?
so 360 in shops, 320 here.

They sell one item, and one item only (per day), for one day only.
There will be about €12-13 delivery on top of that price and they don't have the best reputation here for delivery stuff, though I've never bought off them myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭Santa Claus

I bought a skype phone off them last monday (5th) and still hasn't even been shipped yet so not too happy with my first purchase from them!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 141 ✭✭6digitnumber

Yea, Id say if you want this for Xmas then forget about ordering it from iBood. In fact microsoft might have made another xbox360 price cut by the time they get around to shipping it. Save yourself the hassle and buy a bundle at smyths or gamestop.

"Got a very good deal on a xbox 360 premium in gamestop limerick came with halo 3,blue dragon, king kong and with second wireless controller and viva pinta and forza 2 included €399 the lot "

    FYI.....
Bought a 360 last night in GAMESTOP and that deal above is still available.

I went for a different deal that they have however:
360 Pro Console, Pro Evo 2008, Forza 2, Viva Pinta, Extra Wireless Controller for €399.

They have other deals as well, but I didn't take much notice of them once I saw the PES deal. (I was going to get that game anyway so it saved me €65)

Just on another point, I went to a few different places prior to purchasing, just to compare the deals available:
Xtravision, Harvey Norman etc and none of them could match the value, or service for that matter, than in Gamestop.

Anywhere I inquired whether the XBOX was one of the new versions with the HDMI port, I was greeted with blank faces, but the guy
in Gamestop knew straight away what I was looking for and went so far as to take my console out of the box to ensure that I had one with a HDMI port.

Also with a major PES 2008 tourney planned for Xmas night, I needed another controller, so I asked him for a wired controller.
Further to this geezer being sound, he informs me that they have one second hand on the shelf and it would be only half the normal price. BTW, it works perfectly.

Thumbs up from this punter on Gamestop.
