Hi I've just bought a 1953 pontiac from the states.. its a custom street rod thats been totally restored... I've added a few pics... I looking for some help reguarding insuring the car... who are the best companies to deal with?

Also is there much of a market to sell on cars like this? I'm not sure how long I'm going to keep it as I maybe moving aboard...

    All comments are welcome
    thanks

Yup Boomstick, when the car was being customised the orignal 53 motor was replaced with a 79 400... the ride was lowered to 3inches, the top was chopped and the backend shaved... I've more pics if any one wants to see...

    Holy Hotrods Batman!

That is one nice piece. I'd be afraid to

    a) Put it on a transporter to the docks

    b) Put it on a ship

    c) Drive it home

Get lots of insurance for shipping. And best of luck with it - it totally rocks!

It does look truely amazing but I question the wisdom of "just bought a 1953 pontiac from the states" and "I'm not sure how long I'm going to keep it as I maybe moving aboard... "

..................sounds like you either didn't plan to buy it and came across it cheap or you would like some reassurance that you did the right thing and can get out of it finacially safe should you choose to !

My answer would be, if you bought it cheap...........well done, and I dont think you would ever have a problem selling a car that looks that good and sounds like it will drive well too. There are plenty of US cars over here and the Club mentioned above is fantastic AFAIK.

    Good luck with it !

You have to love the americans. Turbo charged and they still get less than 50bhp per litre.

You have to love the americans. Turbo charged and they still get less than 50bhp per litre.

That's because of , A) Stupid emissions restriction crap that the powers that be decided shoould be put on cars, strangling the life out of big V8s.

And B) The fuel crisis in the 70s caused manufacturers to try make their engines economical.

Tuned up more, that engine could easily mke 450/500 bhp at least.

And the 300 bhp figure doestn show the massive torque of V8s

Hi as soon as I get the car over here I'll post some pics with the Irish Plates on it, it seems you have to prove everything to some people who seem jealous or just stupid... its some where over the Atlantic now in a container... I should have it by the start of September, the insurance seems to be coming out at about 550euro for fully comp, but I have been asked by most to either have it assessed or have it pass the nct to prove its road worthy... Now I imagine it wont pass an NCT because of the emmissions, so I will have to get it assesed... how much does that normally cost?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 2,957 Mod ✭✭✭✭macplaxton

If it's not too far to drive to the North, ask if the insurer will accept an UK MOT?

    Let me explain:

The reason is that every few months for some strange reason someone pops up here claiming that the own/just bought a rare/expensive classic. So far we've had school kids claiming that they own GT350's and posting pictures, grown men organising to meet with groups of people to see their cars only to cancel as the cars don't exist, the list is long.

Your purchase raises a few eyebrows, for a few different reasons, none of them because of the readers jealously or stupidity, but because of the following:

Its very unusual to buy a classic without looking into insurance first
After buying the car you have, more or less, asked how much is it worth
People don't buy if they are thinking of leaving the country
Thats an expensive looking sleigh for an impulse purchase

When you get it in the clubs will be falling over themselves to have a new member with that. Are you going to work on it yourself? do you have somewhere to keep it? Its a really nice machine I'm sure we'll see it at kilbeggin in sep.

Given the fact the car is over 30 years old, you can get it taxed as a classic car, costing only €50 a year as far as I know, and you don't have to do an NCT.

Ti, lovely motors, glad you stuck around.

Just to clarify btw, I've received a couple of requests asking if I do custom drawings, the artwork isn't mine, just bore a striking resemblance to one of the posted pictures! As mustang says, we have seen a few dreamers and test pilots around before, and certainly don't wish to appear cynical, well, not too much anyway :)

I look forward to seeing that car on Irish plates, a unique and very good looking machine.

Wow! Would you mind my asking what sort of money's involved in a car like that? I appreciate that you may not want to say if you're thinking of selling it, just a very vague idea would be fine!

I'd say Ireland given they don't sell the Nissan Interstar van in the background in America.
