Can anyone recommend insurance companies that will insure younger drivers with larger engine cars? I am 21, male, 1 year NCB and I drive a 2.2L car.

I am with Quinn Direct at the moment but I don't want to re-insure because they are a terrible excuse for a company. I was banking on FBD but I rang this morning and now they won't quote me at all, despite me getting a quote on the same car a while back.

The bigger companies, Hibernian, AXA, Allianze etc. wont touch me.

I really don't want to go back to QD, but so far they are the only option (and cheapest)

    Anyone?

Could you get FBD to insure you on a smaller car and then change cars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

You could try that xsdirect crowd but if you ever do have a claim you'll be stung by their massive excess, something like €3 or 4k.
Tbh for a young male its very hard to beat quinn, sh1tty service or not.

Younger drivers and bigger engines are always going to be difficult insurance wise.

Brittons are brokers who specialise in this area. Might be worth a call?

what car are you driving? Do you have a full licence?

I'd say xsdirect are the best bet... and I know Quinn have a crappy attitude and service but they might still be the best to go with for now.

It's a BMW 320ci. I got my full licence in February, 1 year driving, 1 year NCB.

I'll give britton a call, though got a quote on their site for 800 with a 4000 excess aswell

well here's another tip for you... Quinn will put your insurance up after year 1 of your policy... and they say it's because the first year is cheap because they subsidize it

That's quite common with insurance companies, FBD didn't do it to me this year but that was a first.

They tried to do this to me too, but if you go onto their website and get a quote as a new customer they'll match the quote from the website.

    €1350 renewal
    €970 website - which I gladly took.

Very similar to me connundrum - €1300 odd renewal, €905 quote from the website. Muppets.

    I just renewed a comp. policy for a quickish 2 litre car. €190 :D

Wow, hasn't happened to me yet - my Quinn renewals have been a good chunk cheaper each year since I joined them, and still can't really be beaten for my setup...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

Well I just tried Britton - 4500 fully comp :D

123.ie also gave me the same figure, with a 4000 excess

Jaysus I think I'll have to continue with Quinn :(

Amazing, at 25, full license, 0 penalty points and a 3year ncb on my 1.6 quinn won't quote me over a 2.0L.

I've seen this so many times friends my age get far cheaper quotes for the same car and when I ring up and ask about it they pretty much give me 2 fingers.

So depressed right now. Still could be worse, could be paying your insurance fees ;)

Try St. Paul Insurance in Harcourt Street (I think), they often insure "high risk" drivers, including anyone who's ever lost their licence for drink driving, I believe. My broker got me a quote from them this year (and no, I've never been done for drunk driving before some smart arse asks :D ) which was significantly better than my renewal quote from AXA, and I'm changing car this week and it's not costing me a penny more for a bigger, more expensive car. Actually try my brokers, First Ireland in Phibsboro, I've been with them for years and every year they've come up with better quotes than anyone else. The number is 8820800.

Indeed it is. I will possibly take it off the road for the winter, and suspend the cover. 2 seasons comp. for €190 :D

if you're already with Quinn then they have to quote you

Where do you live? Might be something to do with your address. Or, is your full licence a new one or something?

Knocklyon D16. Not a high crime area at all.

I'm talking guys who live in the next estate.
I'd love to see the notes written down about me on their system.

They are obliged to give them to you if you ask. Falls under the data protection act.

Anyway rang those brokers mentioned on the other page and you guessed it, €4600! Since quinn are quoting only €2k, it looks like I am forced to go back.

    Thanks for the help anyway.

I dunno who some of you are giving your hard earned to but I have never ever heard of an insurance company putting money up after the 1st year for the 1st being discounted??

I'm 25, 4 points (I do have 6 years NCB though) and a brand new BMW 335i coupe is €1100 fully comp. with Hibernian Direct.

    hmmm

mine went down almost 50% on my second year, with quinn on a 1.9l

It happens quite a lot, I change companies fairly often because of it.

The value of the car is nowhere near as important to the quote as the risk category - you'll probably find that a €10k car in the same category is only a couple of hundred euro cheaper for you to insure, if even that.

I think at your age with a 2.2litre car just getting a decent quote is lucky, whats wrong with quinn direct anyway i've been with them 2 and a half years and never had a problem with them at all.

I think they are tricky on paying claims.

I had no problem with them paying me when I claimed for my own car, leaving them to recoup the costs from the insurance of the guy who hit me...

@MarkN: The NCB there is what's making you appealing to insurers. I'd have to guess there's something about layke that's causing the high quotes, and they rightly have to tell you what that is when they quote you. Layke, do you work in a dodgy area? Or a trade or the arts/performance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭Dwilly

I'm 32 full NCB and no points, yet for an RS4 I was quoted almost 3 grand also with Hibernian Direct. And that's only slightly faster than the 335ci.

They class some cars ultra-high risk I guess.

Dwilly - an RS4 is an out and out high performance car, the BMW is a sports coupe with a bloody fast engine stuck onto it. I can see why the Audi would be classed higher risk but 3,000 for a man your age is crazy and if you shopped around, you would get it down.

I'm not so sure it's not all about the value of the car lads, I'm sure I could insure a 5 year old 1.4 Golf for 300 quid at this stage.

Not at 25, if you were over 30 you might get it as cheap as €300

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭MarkN

It's 900 with Hibernian on a 2001 1.4 Golf according to insureme.ie (and my occupation is deemed high risk the OP may not be), add on a discount for my parents having Hibernian policies and me having a Hibernian home insurance policy and I'd get it down to around 500 I reckon. Point is, it can be done.

If you are still looking at it, Goggin Insurance on Dorset St sorted me out. I know an S3 is not in RS4 territory but it's a high performance Audi all the same and they got me fully comp with 4 points for 1,400 quid and I'm not near that 30 hill either :p

i got a good quote with Eagle Star. 750 fully comp for a 2 litre car, i have 1 years no claims bonus as well. 'd try them, considering hibernian were the next cheapest at 1300. eagle has windscreen cover, and breakdown cover as standard, its not an extra like in Quinn Direct.

That's true, but last time I renewed, Quinn fully comp with full glass cover and full breakdown assist was still cheaper than anything Eagle could offer me. No contest there for me anyway.

Did you mention you were part time in the traffic corp? That might get you a discount:

Op I see that a lot.

But someone explain this to me:

I was on the M50 recently in the right lane going at the speed limit and overtaking cars on the left lane. Grand, no problem.

So I come to one of the 100km/hr zones and I reduce my speed to match. Next of all there is a queue of cars behind me, and the woman behind me moves right up my backside. She eventually overtakes, as do most of the other cars, and I get dirty looks from everyone - one woman in her golf looked as if she was screaming at me  Then they all whizzed past me.

What on earth? Do they not realise it's a 100km zone?? They were braking the law and it's my fault?! Sure I could have moved into the left lane (and did eventually), but for what reason? They are all braking the speed limit.

    MrP

I didn't want to start a new thread, just a question about insurance

My dad currently drives a Volvo and wants to buy a Ford Capri as a second car, I was just wondering whether if he could insure me on the Capri as a named driver without being a named driver on the Volvo? As I'm wondering whether hell get the cheap classic car insurance rate and tax rate? Is nearly consider buying a classic and paying his classic car tax and insurance if it possible?

    Hopefully I explained well, thanks
