Anyone any expericence with either of these cards?

I am trying to find out is it possible to save game progress with the R4 DS card. I would of thought it game progress can be saved onto the micro mem card ,but I would like to know for sure

Saving works the same way as saving on a regular cartridge.

AFAIK there are shortages everywhere. The reason being the fact that it is hugely popular and they simply can't produce them fast enough. I think many people are trying to source an M3 as an alternative.

An r4 and an M3 are identical hardware wise it's just their firmware that varies. Also, AFAIK the R4 users generally get patches for new games a few days befre the M3 users do but that's a very minor woe tbh.

It's beyond me why people want to spend over 100 euro on a DS xtreme when you can get a r4 for 33 delivered.

Are the flashy lights on the ds-x really THAT good?????????????

A guy I know spent over a hundred euro on a ds-extreme thinking that it had 4GB of memory, its really only 4 gigabits =X

    I bought a few 1Gb Firecard's off Dealextreme for €22 each delivered.
Has 1Gb of Nand memory built in and works like a charm.

Anyone know if the R4 works with a Mac? I heard there's a programme you need to use with it so if I bought it and it doesn't work on OSX, I'm screwed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

You're just reading a FAT formatted SD card, so I don't see why not. There is no special software needed for the R4DS.

    Yup, it will work.

You just drag and drop the roms/ homebrew etc. over to the SD card. Pop the SD card into the R4DS and it works. You don't need a special programme or anything..

    Don't we all.

But like I said above, consider the M3 as an alternative.

So that's basically three times the cost of a r4 for more or less the same thing. (Minus the ability to have more than 1gb of memory)

    The poor bugger.

Whenever I see things advertised in gigabits, I can't help but think they're trying to mislead people.

I asked in another thread & never got a response, does anyone know whether this will work ok with a ds bought in the states?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 260 ✭✭stev2604

This site seems to have the R4 in stock, although the cards are in Gb. How many MB's are there in a Gb?

It'll work just fine, also I notice the R4 now fully supports single cart download play, not something I've had a use for but nice to know it's there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yeah, the new firmware for R4/M3simply came out yesterday. Download play on most games is now supported.

Fantastic, thanks for that. Whats single cart download play?

How easy is updating the firmware btw?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

To upgrade the firmware, you copy a system folder to the SD card and thats it. No flashing or dodgy procedures like that.

Download play is where you have game that can wirelessly send a copy of itself (usually a cutdown version) to another DS so you can play against a friend (even if they don't have a cartridge). Only supported by certain games though.

Has anybody found a site that has R4 DS card in stock? It says that there is a 7 day back order on the dealextreme site.

Also I presume the R4DS works fine with both the DS and DSLite? Sorry if that's a stupid question but I only found about this stuff today so I'm totally new to it.

I check this http://wiki.scorpei.com/index.php/R4_compatibility_list for compatibility and I did a quick search and it seems the claim of full download play compatibility is indeed wrong, metroid prime hunters fails but mario kart now works, so it's getting there. CycloDS has 100% I hear but I might be corrected on that too!

I think the main advatage of the single cart download play is if you had a few people together with DSs then you can have a multiplater game even if only one person has the game. It also can send demos and the like (varies with each game of course) but is no advantage to the individual who plays alone or online (or in the company of others with the same game)

35 sterling for an M3? and that doesn't even include postage? I wouldn't pay that.

    It's the same price ;)

    34.49 sterling which equals....$69.9 . Before postage.

Dealextreme is $46.90 including postage. Actually the 2gb one on dealextreme is $60. Still cheaper.

I dunno. Depends whether you mind waiting or not.

You get a 1GB card aswell:) . All I really want to know is how reliable thay are.

..And for a tad under that price you can get an M3 with 2gb card !

    http://www.model-gadget.com/shop/index.php?cPath=49&osCsid=7b0112fcfba1118fde664f2f84e6ceda

Got 2 for the kids for 67.50 sterling which makes them...um...33.75 each !

Have to say no probs with either delivery or M3 themselves, seemingly M3 and R4's come out the same factory ?
Another point they are uk based and work from Cornwall of all places, so delivery to ireland shouldn't be an issue though i received mine here in uk.

It's being shipped from the UK by airmail so hopefully have it next week :D I'l let ya'll know how I get on with it if anyones interested.. (just have to buy my own DS now lol, my brothers getting sick of me hogging it)

cant even find these on ebay, wonder when they will be back, in argos we sell something similar but comes only with a 512mb stick dnt know if it allows you to put homebrew on it.

But its 24 euro...which isnt half bad, i think 24 euro maybe after my discount :P

thats the link there to the english site, anyone any ideas of what this item can do homebrew wise?

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5681039.htm

these are plentiful in stock in argos.

What is it you are looking for? If it's an R4 or M3 they're easy enough to find! (though not on ebay for some reason).. Tbh I wouldn't touch that argos yoke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

r4 seems what i want, but it seems out of stock everywhere

Yeah anywhere that does have them in stock is usually sold out within a few hours.. Go for an M3 Simply though, they're almost identical to the R4, but are easier to find. They have the same hardware etc, there's little difference between them

Yo I just got a DS from the states. What is this R4 card that everyone speaks about, is there any probs using one with a US version? Also the dude in the shop said that I need to buy a euro power plug for it, can I not just use a convertor on the US one or will that short circuit it?

A european and US DS are virtually identical for the purpose of games etc. An R4 card is no different, as its the same size and structure as a DS game card, but it contains a removable microSD card which can store downloaded DS game roms, movies, music and homebrew applications which you can them play on your DS. Google/Wiki it or read through the thread for more info.

As for the power plug, it'l be much safer and cheaper to just get a european lead. From experience, using a US lead requires an expensive and large voltage converter, as opposed to just an adaptor.

I bought mine from this site on Friday and it was shipped out today so they have them in stock. Cost me €55 for the R4DS and a 1gb Sandisk SD Card. I wet for the 3-5 days DHL shipping though so if you pick the airmail option it only costs €43. Good deal IMO

I personally wouldn't trust a website with warnings such as:

"M3 Perfect Lite, M3 Perfect Lite Pro all have out of stcok, M3 Lite may be will have stock 10 days Later, M3 Team have stop produced the M3 Lite Pro.
All the Supercard Prodcuts are on sale."

It's reassurring that all supercard prodcuts are on sale though.

I ordered mine from R4ds.co.uk but there are postal strikes in the UK :( Been waiting 2 weeks now. Strike action will be stopping on the 17th apparently... my bad luck.

Ordered my 3rd R4 from gameyeeeah.com opted for the DHL delivery added about 15 euros to the price but they shipped it last Friday from Hong Kong and I had it today (Monday) No customs issues as they value it at $6.
