    Hi everyone,

This is my first post so please be gentle. I think this is the right board to be posting on so here I go. I’m looking for some advice and after reading through many posts I get the feeling I’ll at least get some feedback from more experienced business people.

My question is has anybody tried to get into the DIY retailers like Woodies or Atlantic Homecare with products they are selling and if so how did you go about it.

    Cheers,

    TOAB

Let me rephrase the question. What mark up would woddies or a similar DIY retailer be looking for on a product they are selling.

Here are the following ponts for your question.

    Woodies/Atlantic/Telfords are all same group
Homebase / Argos are same & operated from UK
    B&Q are operated from UK

Arrow, Homevalue & Topline are the other three main Irish groups and work a buying offices for many of the independents.

If its like any other trade, it will depend on your product. The bad news that if its a single product it is unlikely to get listed unless you have a range of supporting products to supply.

If the product is amazing, then you may have a chance.

All retailers buy about 4-6 months in advance.

Large retailer will want a margin in region of 50% - put another way, a mark up of 100% + VAT and on top of that volume discounts & payment discounts.

In my opinion you'd be better off trying to sell your product on to a specialist distributor of hardware product, take a smaller profit but let someone else do the selling & marketing.

Product type determines mark-ups which would be at least 100% but frequently can range up to 300%. About 200% would be average.
