    Hi all,
am a relative noob to digital SLRs and am interested in the whole area of filters  .
I have a Nikon D80 and am wondering if anyone could suggest which filters I could or should begin to use first?
    many thanks!

Filters are for the lens' not the camera.

Get a UV and a polarising filter. Basic ones at 7dayshop.com are good value.

    Circular Polarizer
    Neutral density graduated
    UV

As said a Circular Polarizer and a Neutral density graduated would be the two sorta standard ones, and can be yield great results. I've also enjoyed playing around with an IR filter.

Don't buy a filter for the sake of buying a filter.
Look into what you want to achieve, and then buy a filter based up on that.

    Thanks folks,
I have already purchased a UV-filter and was on the look out for a circular polarizing filter as I take, as part of my work, a lot of shots on rocky shores including rockpools and macros of invariably wet seaweeds :D
having now checked out what a ND filter does, I also think this would make a postive addition to my outfit.

Does it matter in quality etc what namebrand I should look at buying or do generic brands do the same job for cheaper prices?
thanks again for all your help
