Hope I'm posting in the right section. Apologies if not. New Dell desktop with SATA motherboard. Practically new 320GB HD from old PC (IDE). Bought adapter thingy from Maplins ( http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=36036&doy=28m7 ) and I can power up the adapter and the Hard Drive, but the system won't recognise it, regardless of where the jumpers are.

It locks the PC up when in one position. My other option is just to get a new Hard Drive, so I just have one question. There is an IDE ribbon cable for a floppy drive lying connected to the board. If I were to get the correct cable for an IDE drive would the system recognise the drive via this input...or is it just for a Floppy drive?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Freddie.

I tried one of those thingies once, it didn't work.

The port and ribbon for the floppy drive will only work with floppy drives.

Ah well. That's that then. Thanks for that Sean.

Bought one of these and used it to run an IDE DVD-RW on a Dell SATA computer.
I assume it will also work with IDE hard disks

Okay what you will have to do is check the following,

When your ide hard drive is plugged into the sata daughterboard and connected to a sata port on the hdd, when you go into the bios( press del to enter the bios during boot up) do you see the hdd listed in there?

You might not see it at first as you will have to search for it on some occasions, to do this navigate your bios to where the sata drives are listed, usuall 1-4 or 1-6 or 1-8. If you are sure its connected to sata port 4 for example, press enter over sata 3 in the bios, and hit the auto detect or search, or whatever is similar in yoru bios.

Once this is done you will have to boot into xp. Right click "my computer" and click on "manage" From here you will need to go to "Disk management" One in here you will see all yoru current hard drives and optical drives. And hopefully your old ide drive. At this point you will have to format it and assign it a drive letter.

After this is done the drive is ready to be used.

    Hope that helps.
