Was my Paypal hacked into(I definitley wasnt phished)

Right so tonight i log into my paypal account to find my account access is limited for the following

Until we can collect this information, your access to sensitive account features will be limited. We would like to restore your access as soon as possible, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

We have limited access to sensitive PayPal account features in case your account has been accessed by an unauthorized third party. now i do understand that they cant get my credit card information or buy anything or change the password and all transactions in the past were my own. but im wondering why its saying this and if someone did get in and bought stuff could they remove the tranaction history for it?
initially i tried to remove the credit card but couldnt and basically im up ****s creek if anything was bought because its another family members card



Also posted in online buying and auctions and i would like to plead to a mod not to move/delete/merge as im looking for as much coverage as possible in a short time because im very worried and need answers

thats what i did goto i didnt click any email mumbo or anything it was a secure conection (yellow address bar with padlock)
