    Hey Lads,

This is what i'm after need to get a printer for my own use so I can get to grips with my masters.

Have an absolute heap of stuff needs printing so decided to buy one would prob prefer one that can scan and copy documents also so one of those all in jobs will do(photo's are not important).

My question is what make/model provides the value for money in terms of actual cost per print and which one have the cheapest refills either generic (those syringe filling kits) or straight of the shelfs.

So basically using your KNOWLEDGE recommend me a printer both for initial outlay and running costs thereafter

If it's a serious amount of printing, you're probably better off getting a laser printer. A low-end HP LaserJet should be gettable in the €100-€120 mark. Stand-alone scanners are commodity items these days. Even Argos should do something reasonable. A quick check and compare between Komplett and Argos shows the LaserJet 1018 carried for €119 by both (but you'll need P&P with Komplett). They also have scanners for €60.

    Hi

I'd check the cost of supplies for those low end laser printers - some of them can be very expensive. Many of them also use all in one toner/fixer units which need replacing more often....

I believe (friend of a friend stuff) the epson printers are cheap enough to run. Make sure if it's an ink jet that there is a seperate black cartridge.

I think something like this from Elara should hit the spot:
EPSON - Stylus DX5050-A4 SPC with memory card slots, 1200dpi scanning, with new individual DURABrite Ultra Inks €105.88
    http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=ECE1348675

Check around - if you want it today, PC World or any local outlet should have it or something similar in stock....

    Just my 2c,

    Paddy

Place in Cork Called "the Ink Shop" on Georges Quay are pretty reasonable.

Make sure you switch on "economode", there is no obvious difference in the quality or darkness, but it puts on less toner. I have a HP LJ1200 which I used for my degree and masters. The toner is meant to last for 3500 pages, but I get between 5000-8000 comfortably.

Be on the lookout. I recently got 4 genuine unopened toners for €50 from a Cartridge place that was closing down.

Finally; buy paper in bulk from a wholesaler.

Try www.inkjet.ie for toner. They (the manufacturer) will only ever give you enough toner/ink for play time no matter where you buy. I acquired a LaserJet from work a couple of years ago and I still haven't replaced the toner on it. So you can get some longevity out of it as long as you don't just print "for jolly".

As maidhc suggests, if there is some kind of conservation mode on it, give it a go. When doing draft printouts of your thesis or whatever, use cheapo paper if needs be (Easons/Tesco is your friend). When it comes to the big day, splash out. Get the nice glossy stuff if you can. If you have some colour pages to print, you could just save them to CD or memory card as a JPEG and go into (multple) PC World(s) and ask the assistant to print it out as a demo. Only after refusing their help after a good 20 minutes of their pestering mind you. :D
