Marshall valve(s)

After reading the 5 channel amp thread I was surprised to hear that Marshall valves are not the best. I blindly assumed they were good!
Anyway, my amp is a lowly Marshall VS102r (original valvestate, none of that red writing lark) and has only one pre-amp valve.
Since I won't be changing the amp for a while (pickup upgrading at the moment) I was wondering would changing that make a big difference to the tone etc.
I haven't changed the valve since I bought the amp, way back. Christ that's almost eight years now!!!!!!!!!!!!
What would be a worthy replacement?!

I wouldn't bother. Most Valvestate amps only have a valve in there as a gimmick, so I seriously doubt it would make any difference to the tone.

    ^ What he said ^

And furthermore, unlike an actual valve amp the Marshall 'hybrids' arent really designed to be user serviceable. It might vary from model to model, but there would probably be an awful lot of fiddling and unscrewing to even get at the 'preamp valve'.

Cheers. That's all I needed to hear. A sensible voice to stop me throwing good money after bad I guess! I kind of use it as a PA anyway as I use the GT-6 sounds. (Mesa all over the gaff) It only annoys me now and then when I go straight into the amp and it hasn't got the sound I want. I need a smidgen more gain and a tad more treble now and then. Oh well.

Save your money, buy a decent amp (Engl) at a later stage. ;)
