3pay- what will work?

For the data bundles on 3pay - what will work?

Eg the GMail web site, will it work? It's a padlocked page, but think the url is not an https one.

Other login pages, will they work if they are unsecure pages?

Anyone heard anything on the abolition of the prepay proxy?

The Gmail java app won't work, however 3 offer an alternative, if less functional way, of getting into it. Generally speaking you can access any normal (non-http) web site through your mobile, albeit in an often somewhat garbled form due to the way the proxy messes with pages.

Generally speaking it's crap. And the proxy is so slow, it's actually slower than using GPRS, according to user reports on here! I don't know how they managed that...

You mean a way to get the _java_ version or is the alternative to use the http access, mobile version?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,784 ✭✭✭Urban Weigl

The Gmail Java client won't work. HTTP will work. 3 even give you a link to Gmail.

The €5.99 is more than enough on prepay. I suppose it's not that bad, depends what you want.

Will use it for GMail, Wikipedia, and other similar pages. 100 mb would be more than enough.. How long will it take to return a wikipedia request? Gmail? Are we talking 5, 10 or 30 seconds?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 127 ✭✭apollodjs

Why dont three drop this in pre pay so you can have the same as bill pay does anyone know if they plan to do this in the future?

The front page of Boards is a quarter of a meg.

100 mb won't last long except for email.

the gmail app works for me but i am on bill, is there much of a difference between the two services?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,191 ✭✭✭The_Hustler

Huge difference. The proxy causes all the problems and bill doesn't use a proxy.

I wrote to 3 Ireland's Managing Director about this and was subsequently contacted by their head of PR - initially they were not aware about the difference between billpay and 3pay as their technical team initally told them there was none - but they promised to do an investigation

they have come back to me and said that after conversations with their technical team they confirmed that 3Pay is routed differently (for various reasons) and there maybe some https sites that can't be reached directly -

"Because of this we are upgrading the service (current target dates is Sept) which will mean secure sites will be accessible to 3Pay...."

Thanks for your efforts! Interesting reply! Would this mean that also java applications can be downloaded and used?

Did they tell you what those various reasons were?

Wow that's pretty cool. Hopefully they allow you to use apps from your phone as well.

they didnt elaborate on the "various reasons"...but

since yesterday 3pay mobile broadband has been far far faster on my n95 - wonder if they have done some upgrade - it certainly isin't like it used to be waiting for a page to load....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 127 ✭✭apollodjs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,916 ✭✭✭podgeandrodge

maybe some of the others can confirm the applications?

but something has definitely changed on 3pay - it loads everything fast now.

just wish i could monitor my usage - got the 100mb €5.99 package and havent a clue how much ive used up!

Secure sites definitely did not work before, even the likes of https://www.paypal.com used to be blocked. Also the Gmail java app, and Opera Mini, did not work before.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 127 ✭✭apollodjs

This is good news might be tempeted to switch if they finally fixed it can someone else confirm the applications etc?

urban, when you say https paypal didnt work do you mean you could not even access the site or that the login didnt work?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,784 ✭✭✭Urban Weigl

Could not even access the site, it would not load.

I think in Motorola you need to set the access point in the java settings. so just set it to what ever the 3 settings are.

Ok ta mcguyver will check that out...

Oh! The fact that it's possible to download the app at all on 3pay now, should be evidence enough that data connections within the app will also work, methinks? Will pick up a Nokia 6151 on 3pay later today if the mobile BB is the same on pre- and billpay now. :)

http://www.gmail.com/app is the right URL for the Java app.

    Will Opera mini work?

I have my old 6280 and found that the web application on it was useless. I am going to give it to my girlfriend with the 3pay sim they gave me but there is no point if she cannot browse the web.

I suppose it will work, but I havent tried myself. If Gmail application works, then in theory the Opera mini should also work.

Can somebody check if it's still using a proxy?

Yes can someone find this out please, I'm only with vodafone because they allow opera but they are way overpriced, if 3 now allow opera I'm definitely switching to them. I can buy a 100mb bundle for 5euro with 3pay.

Just downloaded and installed Opera Mini 3.1.2 for my V3x, It runs 6 network tests after installation, and sadly, mine failed it :/. Before it runs the "network" test I see This: URL:beta.opera-mini.net:1080. and "Use data network?" I selected the radio button entitled: Yes, ask once, and then went to install. Tried with Opera Mini 4 beta too and it also failed.
I'll mess around with it for a bit longer. Don't know a lot about the 3 settings tho.

Strange. I am trying the Gmail app on a brand new N6151 now and it wont work. I can download the app alright but then get this message that this program needs a data connection. Seems as if the proxy is still there, something like widerweb.net - too bad.

Have you configured the access point in the nokia?

    apollodjs wrote:

Not much you can configure really. It's not possible to add new APNs in this phone so I just use the preconfigured one, 3ireland.ie, and through that one it does not work.

Poster who wrote here that data within the Gmail app works - was that what you meant or just that it was possible to download the Gmail app, but that then you were stuck?

Also, when I try to download Opera Mini from the operamini.com page, it says invalid file format when the download is finished.

I managed to download AFT, but cannot use data within the program.

On another note, am I correct in that once the data bundles have been used up, I will get a message that they are, and that I have to buy a new bundle to use more data, or will it be priced at a per-kb rate after that? I find it difficult to keep track of my usage, when the Nokia data log covers all data, even things that do not come out of the bundle, such as watch free streaming news videos and browing to My3.
