I had a look at this thread but not sure if its the same problem.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055125461

I have a laptop thats blue screening on me. I orginaly booted it up and the graphic's were arse ways, I rebooted and now the laptop is on the dreaded blue screen, there's an error in the HKCU regestry. I can't restore to a previous working config or boot in safe mode.

I foolishly don't have a backup of the laptop:( and there's quite a bit of stuff on it I'd like to get back . Any idea's on how to go about gettin the data back before I get a sledge hammer to it. ( not the first problem i've had with this blastin thing)

Boot up with installation disc and try doing a repair. 2 ways really, 1) recovery console but you need to know the parameters, 2) would be just to overwrite the installation with a clean one, you wont loose any data once you dont format it or change partition sizes.

Can be done by the experts but will cost about €200.

If the disk is bust then that's a costly affair. Otherwise the disk can be put into an enclosure and used as an external drive.

    Try a reinstall first!

    USB2 case 2.5"

Aluminium case for external 2.5" ATA hard drives
USB2 powered (cable incl. with loop)
    Windows98 or higher required!

    Euro 25.00 inc VAT

Ideally, download a 'live' CD (eg. Knoppix) ... boot into it, perform backup operations to external media (eg. USB harddrive)... reformat & reinstall.

    Or do as Hal1 suggested.
Unless something catastrophic has happened, all your data is still there, it's just windows that's buggered.

    Totally do-it-yourself-able.

Ive never try install a copy of your os onto an external drive and boot from that? ..... is this even possible anyone?

Or you could try getting hold of a linux live cd and using that to boot up. then copy over your data to an external.

Edit.... should really read previous posts :)

Just an update, cheers for the suggestions. I booted up with a Win xpT cd and I was able to recover all the data I needed. I'll give it a go now repairing XP itself,
