Computer slow down

Ok just want to clarify a few things here for myself, im on an ancient computer here(one that was only an office one when it started off anyway)

Its got 1.5ghz and 256 mb of ram as well as a 40 gb hard drive. Now the burning question is it slow because of the low ram and cpu running modern programs or it the way i have 6 gb left on my hard drive, which would be the main problem here.

I mean the programs i have on it are just the bog standard ones i pretty much need to use daily, stuff like itunes windows media player div x cccp codec and a trial of ableton and line 6 gear box, the computer meets all of there min requirements. I have NO music stored on it and a few picutres(which are all jpegs so there small) yet the computer is running slow as hell, just looking for ways to make it run faster without deleteing ****.

I would imagine the best soloution here would be more ram over a larger hard drive and a disc defrag.

also would just like to know cause me and my bro have a bet on it, is the main issue the ram or the low hard drive space .

yeah stick in a gig of ram and you should notice a big difference & maybe a reinstall after you stick the ram in. Low hd space really would not be an issue.

    Oh what OS is installed?

Even an extra 256MB would make the world of difference but 1GB will set you straight, most likely the RAM.

It's a Win 2000 or ME PC. If that's what's still on it an extra 256MB RAM will make it sit up and beg. If it's got XP you'll want the GB of RAM.

I'd also run MSCONFIG and look at what's starting up. You don't need a rake of programs running on standby "in case you might use them". A defrag once in a while is useful too
