Anyone been to Malta?

Hi, was thinking of Malta for a holiday this year. have looked about the web for research purposes etc but was wondering if anyone here has ever been and could give me a short honest review?

I'm attracted by the literature's claims of weather, food, old town character, reputation of the people plus the culture and apparent abundance of things to see like buildings and museums, and potential for island hopping and boat trips. Do these descriptions hold true for anyone who was there?

Only slight reservation is about the clubbers element on the island. Are there boozed/drugged up idiots running amok all over the island or is this sort of thing kept to one corner whereas the rest of the island is more relaxed like I'd prefer? Each to their own and all that I'd just rather tnot have to deal with it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    I was there last week.

It is great, i loved it.

We stayed in a place called mallehia, north of the island, it is a very quite village, near the sea and easy to get to.

There are a couple of lively night spots, like st julians or st pauls bay, we were there once or twice.

We saw no trouble, no druggies, bums, drunks at all.

If you go to malta, make sure you go over to scilliy on the cateramang, it is a great day out, mt etna etc.

    Also visit Valleta, very nice

Food is great, drinks alright(not a cheap as spain) but reasonable.
And the weather is class, 35 -37 degrees, no rain

We stayed in the maritim hotel, very nice and clean.

    Hope this helps

Unfortunatly my holiday is over for this year, so im so jealous you are heading there

I was hoping you'd still be online - I read your travails with Ryanair so am well forewarned, but it looks like nobody else flies there from Dublin!

I was looking to stay in Valletta itself and wanted to check out Scicily as well defo. Sounds promising anyway, thanks for replying!

Yea it's a lovely place. Lovely weather and cos it's a small island there is a nice breeze so it is not *too* hot if that makes sense.
Guys from Libya go there to drink because of the no drinking in Libya but didnt see any clubber type trouble there.
Most people speak English as far as I remember.

    **bump**

Anyone else got any impressions of Malta they could post? I'm hearing nothing but good reports from everyone I must say, here and elsewhere, so I'm getting pretty sold on the idea...

What area in Malta is a good area to stay in for a couple? Easy to get to, bit to do. Not too keen on clubbing, but want some kind of nightlife... Thank you!

St Julians is the clubbing part but in saying that the area that they are in is about 100 metres long stayed close to there a few years ago in the intercontinental hotel (5* hotel) but couldn't hear any of the clubs from the there. Nice walk to really good restaurants in Spinola Bay from there too

Plenty of day trips to go on with collection from hotel

Yep, malta is a lovely spot, was in St.Julians too in '98, paceville is the nightlife area, but it wasn't what you'd call bustling... just enough to provide a good atmosphere.. easy to get around the island with the local bus service looping the island, when I was there it was about 10p to travel to the capital! Beautiful city, but not at all tacky.. will return one of these days...

Malta's a great place went there for the honeymoon stayed in the Dolmen hotel in Buggiba the people are very friendly, its clean, the night life aint exactly rockin, foods alright, no language barriers. Get a bus into valleta and spend the day just walkin around the walled city amazing buildings and lots of museums/history to explore. Try and do some scuba dives, the waters amazing
Dont forget the day trip to sicily (bring your wallet and your spare wallet and your other wallet you'll need it). Good crack though.
oh yea it v.safe police station in every village(it was a garrison island for the brits)
the weather for us was great no rain for the holiday.
definitely will be going back. a destination not to be missed.:D:D

Thank you. I've booked a hotel with fairly ok reviews on Trip Advisor (on a budget!). Is it possible to dive without the Padi Cert (or whatever it's called)? I know I dived in Oz with a qualified diver holding my hand, is this kind of thing common or restricted to Oz? I've heard diving is very good in Malta...though I'm going in March so I'm not sure the water will be very warm!

Personally we were not fans of it - weather , people , sun , food was all fine but there are no beaches - which if you are used to the it and look forward to a walk on the beach etc it is not going to happen - there are a few gravelly beaches but they are not fantastic - ice cream was good over there !! Sorry for being negative but I know we will not be going back because of that alone
