Is the Pentax K100/110D worth getting as opposed to the Canon 400D?

Pluses as I see them are the backwards compatability of lenses.
    SD memory cards.
    AA batteries.

Not sure if there are any other plusses though.

I've used both & I own a k100d. 400d has more megapixels, faster sustained shooting (if you are into sports / action photography) and more accessories (lenses, flashes, etc.) available locally. k100d has in body image stabilisation, better low light capabilities and is (IMHO) somewhat better built. k100d has now been "superseded" by a (cosmetically upgraded) k100d super, so you should find one for very little online. But you won't go far wrong with either.

The AA batteries point is a good one - it's extremely handy to have one charger for all your batteries (including flash) and to be able to swap batteries in extremis. Cheaper also compared with buying extra proprietary batteries.

A friend of mine suggested that CompactFlash is better than SD cards for pro cameras - would anyone else back this up? Or is it just personal preference?

A Canon 1D can use both, You can get compactflash in larger sizes than sd at the mo. Dont think there is anything better or worse personally

No - it's the k10d that's weather sealed. (10mp bigger brother of the k100d.) Incidentally there is a Samsung camera - the GX10 - that's a rebadged k10d and there are some fantastic deals now available on that camera bundled with two very good kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200).

I've had a K100D for a while now and I'd highly recommend it.

I'd played with a few 400D's prior to buying it but I was never really taken with them. The ergonomics weren't as good imo.

    + Price
+ Body image stabilization, a godsend
    + User friendliness
    + Good kit lenses
    + Decent low light performance

    - 6MP
    - Write time to memory can be slow, depending on what you use it for
    - err...

I'm buying K10D for X-mas, so there's another to the "superb lenses for reasonalable money" club ;-)
