Pond overflow!

I have my pond going now (at last). However, the recent heavy rain has left the water level at max, and it is now permanently overflowing. Can I drill a hole in the side (plastic pre-formed thing) and put an overflow pipe out to a short distance away? Anyone done this? Any downside?

Leave it alone unless the level is above a point where it may damage an item or fitting.
I say this as we have a pond which regularly reaches the max mark, but soon returns below this once the weather improves.
The excess water will drain off into the surrounding soil and causes no harm.
