I apolise for my complete ignorance on the topic but I'm just wondering if it is illegal or legal to download a book that you already own so that you can read it on a PDA, laptop etc...

I thank you in advance for this info.

PS: I did search on google but I just got stuff about music and stuff, even though I searched for info on books.

PPS: I posted this in the Literature forum but it did not evoke much of a response..

    Copy right is copy right.

Are you scanning the book that you own already and transferring that to your device?

Or simply finding it somewhere on the internet and downloading it electronically for the first time?

Technically, it is a copyright infringement in either case as you are making an (unauthorised) copy of material that belongs to the author. Only they have the rights to distribute, adapt, etc.

I've said it on this board before in relation to music.

Downloading or being in possession of an infringing copy in Ireland in a non-business environment is not copyright infringement.

Crazy. Are you sure? Is this exception covered in the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000?

In light of this, what basis are IRMA persuing file-sharers in the jurisdiction with? Only the multiple infringing copies upload / dowloaders is it??
