I am buying a ring for my girlfried from ebay at a cost of $820 and i am having is shipped to my uncle in NewJersey to send it over as a gift.

What are the chances of getting stung for customs???

If they open it am i screwed, do they normally open 'private post' from individuals?

Depends on if you declare it, and how it is declared. A ring costing that much might want insurance. This can be 3rd party without the value disclosed on the outside. Otherwise you are still technically liable if it is a gift, think the limit on gifts is about €45. He could put in a letter saying it is the ring you left there, so it is not a gift. Don't know how that works, but I was considering buying stuff and was thinking it could be marked as repaired goods, yet still have a high value for insurance reasons.

If he just sticks the ring in a package it should get through no probs, thin enough so it is not even techincally a package. Then he could have it registered there without saying what is in it, should have its own insurance.
