My parents are buying me a laptop for the final yr of college.

To cut to the point, i only play poker on a desktop, so has anyone any recomendations or anything that i want or don't want with regard to spec for playing poker online (multi table up to 5 tables?) and run Poker tracker or poker offfice?

well screen size is really the only consideration. I have a 12" screen on my laptop and can have 6 stars tables open with minimal overlap. However if you play on ipoker or a site with no resizeable tables, you would want a much bigger screen.

im not up to date with the latest computer stuff, but core2 duo sounds good, at least 1gig ram, i guess vista, its pretty solid for poker anyway. obviously get an external mouse, preferably wireless, ie bluetooth or a 5.4ghz wireless one, not the other type of wireless which requires line of site, name is escaping me atm.

you could always go the mac route too, you can run parrells or something else to run windows on it.

just a point, if you are getting a 1gig ram, dont get vista, it takes up too much ram to run it. you wanna have 2 gig for vista or you will have trouble running other programs at the same time as poker, such as poker tracker etc.

i have a gig of ram and i have 10 prima, pahud, poker tracker importing and mozilla all running without a bother. Obvioulsy if you can get more do, but 1 gig is sufficient.

vista is great, hasnt crashed on me yet!

1 gig is loads. get a dell, good support and they are fairly well tested by poker players. screen resolution is important, more so than screen size actually. if you can get up to 1920 X 1200 or something similar that's very good.

I have a bit of overkill on the laptop stats with 4gig of ram and all singing all dancing everything but I also do some video editing so i need it... but I do have a 17" screen which is nice for multitabling..... If you are serious enough about it leave enough room to buy a second monitor....

A friend of mine has this machine.... for poker it's juts amazing if not a little overpriced. the screen size is just amazing.

but you should have change out of a grand and have exactly what you need... also dont rule out brands like acer for excellent value.... and leave room in your budget to buy extra ram from here www.shop4memory.com

That dell is some piece of kit allright. I played on a 1600x1080 res last night and it fitted 2 ipoker screens horizontally with no overlap and maybe an inch or less space left. Vertically though there was a small bit of overlap but if it was 1600x1200 id say there would be little or no overlap.

Saying that i have 2 monitors 1st one is 1280x1024 and you would have seen that in the video i made in the 50NL thread so you can play upto 4 tables on that resolution but as you seen theres quite a bit of overlap but on my second monitor 1024 x 768 its very awkward to play more than 1 table as there is huge overlap so id suggest getting at least 1280x1024 as i know you play on ipoker

check out the Dell outlet store, from time to time you can get a really great deal on there.

Also, when you are buying the laptop look into getting a docking station for it, the majority of the time your laptop will be left on a desk anyway, docking station will mean you can just slot it in and have another keyboard and mouse already there for you, all about convience I tells ya :)

    Mac Mac Mac!!!

Ok so I'm a recent convert but two considerations if you're getting a lappy for Uni you should consider what you need for your studies and not what you need for poker otherwise stop wasting your time and turn pro already. :D

Vista is a ****e version of Tiger. But having said that it's marginally better than XP. If you get Vista make sure you go for Home Premium at least. More Ram never does any harm. - However if your cost conscious then a laptop with XP pre-installed instead of Vista may be the way to go. Keyboard layout and screen size will be big considerations. So try to see the laptop in the flesh before buying - I'm not a huge fan of Dell even though I have two of their desktops in the house - But then I prefer to build my own desktops anyway.

The Macbook Pro is in my humble opinion - quite simply the best computer I have ever owned. I now play poker on it via Parallels emulator and that's fine - but they are very very expensive... And if you are going to play a lot of poker on the laptop then you are probably better off sticking with a windows machine.

I recommend Rock computers as they only make laptops - Dell are very competitive. HP overpriced. Toshiba solid and reliable. Sony - nice - overpriced and full of extra software that you'll never use. Acer cheap but good - same for Asus.
