The Love Song - Marilyn Manson. tell your guests beforehand the name of the song, but 'forget' to tell them the name of the artist

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,506 ✭✭✭muletide

A very nice song for that sort of thing would be the Beatles, Here There and Everywhere. Its a song you dont really hear that much and it is nice and short so you would not be stuck out on the floor on your own for ages.

Edit: just saw that it was used in Friends so thats it ruined

Yeah thanks but I dont my better half would like Marylin or if the band could play it. :)

Try googling for first dance albums, you may get some ideas from them - here's one the WTB bought

    http://www.todayfmstore.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2054

Edit: By the way - have you picked your band yet? They should be able to give you a list of popular songs, which will be ones they are familiar with.

We did not have a first dance as I was too ill at the time :( but we would have had "True Friends in Time" by the Golden Hoarde, apparently it gets played at weddings all the time.

The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

I was at a wedding a while ago where the couple had that song as there first song
    Hilarious

    So romantic :)

When I wake up yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you

If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you

When I come home yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm lonely yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man whose lonely without you
When I'm dreaming yes I know I'm gonna dream
Dream about the time when I'm with you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

Yeah, that's a great suggestion. The more you hear it the more wonderful it gets (sound of me searching around for iPod.../)

The Tom Baxter one is very good too. And how about "Islands in the Stream" by Dolly and Kenny? A great song, and one that will also please the older generation.

For our first song we had:

"If I didn't have you" by Randy Newman, you may be more familiar with it as the song from the movie, Monsters Inc.

It was a simple quickstep, we got two private dance lessons from a lovely woman in Bury St Edmunds (near where I live) and we had no problems.

Only recommendation I would have is that couples practice with the girl wearing a long dress! Makes it easier on the day.

We snuck up to the bridal suite after dinner to practise the dance we had rehearsed in the dress - did wonders for my nerves i can tell you!!

With tongue firmly in cheek, how about the following :

"How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away"--Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks

"I'm Gonna Hire A Wino To Decorate Our Home" -- David Frizell's

"My Dog Just Died, So Now You're the Only Bitch I've Got" -- Johnny Carson

"It's Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night that Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long" -- The Notorious Cherry Bombs

"You Are Everything" - Marvin Gaye

Not sure how you'd dance to it, though. Maybe just sway.

See that's why i'd recommend something a little up tempo. 'Swaying' in front of a big crowd of people for five minutes would be daunting to say the least.

At least if you're properly dancing, the time seems to move more quickly..

    Defo go up tempo!

I think Damien Dempsey does a cracking version of the Pogues "Rainy Night in Soho" on his new album - love the words especially the opening "I've been loving you a longtime, down all the years down all the days"... but my OH thinks Shane McGowan wrote it about someone who had died?

Can't find any info on it tho if anyone could shed some light? ... just afraid to upset anyone...

    Van Morrison - Moondance
Mike and the Mechanics - Looking Back
Vanessa Williams - Save the Best for Last. (beautiful song, by who was the most beautiful woman in the world at the time)

I agree with Andy Williams - Can't take my eyes off you. Beautiful song.
Take That - Rule the World/A Million Love Songs
    Please don't play Robbie Williams!
Marc Cohn - Walking in Memphis
    Jack Johnson - Better Together
    John Legend - Save Room..

What an absolutely brilliant sugestion. Damn I wish I had read this a couple of months ago. What a brilliant song to dance to!

We had "Can't take my eyes off you" by Andy Williams at my wedding, which was nice. As someone else has said, its up tempo so its easy to dance to & plenty of room for the Bride to do a big twirl and show off her dress during the chorus!

We were kinda in the same boat as the OP, trying to chose a song. In the end, the band leader e-mailed me a list of the songs they play and we just picked one off that.

Have you spoken to your band yet and are they willing to learn new songs if they don't already know it? Also bear in mind that if the song you choose may not sound quite the same when a wedding band plays it!

have i told you lately (that I love you) Van morrison or Some one like you by Van or Rod stewart (my preference is Van's version)

i also like runaway by the corrs - thinking of it for our big day, as its appropriate given I fell in love abroad and 'ran away' from ireland! lol

someone to watch over me - nice and romantic, and there are quick and slow versions

or I like Frank Sinatra or tony Bennett singing 'fly me to the moon'
Frank again with L.O.V.E (or Nat King Cole does a nice version) - I think this is very appropriate for a wedding, and its up beat, so its easy to dance to.

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
    V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please dont break it
Love was made for me and you

    <trumpet instrumental>

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
    V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please dont break it
Love was made for me and you
Love was made for me and you
Love was made for me and you

just make sure no one starts to sing along with that silly fruit juice ad from the telly! lol

please please please don't anyone entertain any thoughts of being 'entertaining' like this on your wedding day - unless the vibe you want to achieve is your guests cringing into their champagne, and plastering a fake smile on their faces and saying 'oh that was great!' through gritted teeth! i can't imagine anything more tacky or cringeworthy! or sad!

we had: Lionel Richie, stuck on you
great song/lyrics and if you don't really want to learn a dance have a genuine "slow song" it's great and bands can generally do it too
had been to far too many weddings that had andy williams so went for something different

nice song, nice lyrics, and an easy one to sway to if you have 2 left feet.

We had "Happy to be stuck with you" by Huey Lewis
Weve had some fun, and yes weve had our ups and downs
Been down that rocky road, but here we are, still around
We thought about someone else, but neither one took the bait
We thought about breaking up, but now we know its much too late
We are bound by all the rest
    Like the same phone number
    All the same friends
    And the same address

Yes, its true, (yes its true) I am happy to be stuck with you
Yes, its true, (yes its true) Im so happy to be stuck with you
cause I can see, (I can see) that youre happy to be stuck with me

Weve had our doubts, we never took them seriously
And weve had our ins and outs, but thats the way its supposed to be
We thought about giving up, but we could never stay away
Thought about breaking up, but now we know its much too late
    And its no great mystery
    If we change our minds
Eventually, its back to you and me

Yes, its true, (yes its true) I am happy to be stuck with you
Yes, its true, (yes its true) Im so happy to be stuck with you
cause I can see, (I can see) that youre happy to be stuck with me

We are bound by all the rest
    Like the same phone number
    All the same friends
    And the same address

Yes, its true, (yes its true) I am happy to be stuck with you
Yes, its true, (yes its true) Im so happy to be stuck with you
cause I can see, (I can see) that youre happy to be stuck with me
(yes its true) Im so happy to be stuck with you
Im happy to be stuck with you
Happy to be stuck with you.

It's very tongue-in-cheek. We're not really into mushy idyllic lovesongs.
