sky receiver problem

    My sky receiver seems to have gone on the blink. I subscribe to the all channels except movies and sport. The problem is all channels except RTE1 RTE2 TV3 and TG4 work fine but after a few seconds on any of the Irish ones it freezes and says no satellite signal being received. I switched receivers with a borrowed one and all works fine so im almost certain its the receiver. I phoned sky and they ran through some tests and said yes I had a problem and an engineer needed to call out and it would be €100 call out fee. I said I had no intention of paying that and said I would consider cancelling.

    Is it worth my while to attempt to cancel and hopefully get a new box off them for free or would I just be better off picking up a second hand one off adverts or whatever? I have been with sky for a good few years and have never had any other problems.

    I had the same thing happen about two years ago. I called them and they had me perform several system tests. The box was dead and after 15 minutes I got "oh sorry but your box is broken, ~€100 to get a new one".

    I asked to be put through to accounts so I could close my account. I pointed out that they were receiving over €400 a year from us and we had been a customer for many years. I said it was a disgrace that I would have to pay and I was going to to with a cable provider as they replace the equiptment. There wasnt much point in owning a broken sky box. Anyways got a new box installed for free. Well worth the five minutes complaining!

    Thanks for the quick reply. I suppose its worth a shot for a 5 minute moaning phone call :D and if it worked for you .... who knows.

    Well I got on to accounts last thrusday and fought my case. In the end they agreed to send an engineer out and cover all costs. Two guys arrived this morning and I got a new receiver and they changed my quad lnb too. Said it might have been hit by lightning :eek: ..... anyways they took my old box away but never gave me a new remote to go with the new box , instead left me with the old remote :mad: , suppose I cant really complain as I got it done for nothing :D . Worth the phone call in the end.
