My partner is going to have a smear test this week and she is wondering what to expect during and after?

i.e discomfort, any pain, bleeding afterwards etc

    If you go to
    http://www.icsp.ie/publications/leaflets.470.html
and the first downlod is a leaflet that has useful information.

I've never had any discomfort after a smear test but I have had some light spotting.

It's a weird experience, but it shouldn't be sore or painful. I've never had any after effects.

Doctors often tell patients that it is not painful, but some people might find it uncomfortable.

I've only found it mildly uncomfortable, but a friend of mine found it very painful. It tends to vary from person to person, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Just for the other extreme, I've always found them to be very uncomfortable and they tend to leave me with an ache afterwards that feels not unlike menstral cramps.

However one of my good friends doesn't even find them uncomfortable.

I've only had a bit of spotting once and that was cause the doc rushed taking out the speculum and pinched me on the way out.

I'm not trying to scare her here just to let her know how it can be. She'll probably be fine though, I'm just a freak!

First off she shoudl consdier wearing a long skirt which is comfy if she has one and full comfy pants and to bring a sanitary towel with her for afterwards.

There maybe some spotting but they also use medical grade lube on the Speculum which may stay inside you and then work it's way out after the exam.

The more relaxed she is the better it will go tbh and that can be hard to achieve.

I find them very uncomfortable, almost bordering on painful, but I tense up completely when my doctor goes to do it. If your partner can relax, as Thaed said, it'll be a lot easier.

I've never experienced bleeding afterwards, but there's usually a dull ache for a short period of time.

Not something i'd do every day but if she can relax it shouldn't be too bad. Tell her to take a few deep breaths when the doc is putting the speculum in. She may have some light period type cramps after but tell her to take a couple of paracetamol before hand.

It is more uncomfortable if you are not relaxed. Breathe deeply, study the ceiling - and get your girlfriend to tell the doctor or nurse that it is her first time. They are more likely to talk her through everything they are doing (if they're decent human beings) - she'll be in and out in minutes.

As Thaed says - if you wear a long, loose skirt, they'll often let you just ruck that up to your hips instead of taking it off, so you'll hardly even feel undressed (which can be psychologically soothing).

Just on a side note, tell her she may have to wait a shocking amount of time for the results (5 months!!!) and that in ireland it seems that that is normal!!!

she'll be lucky to get it back in 5 months - my last one took 7!!! I'd even forgotten I had it by the time I got the results. There's a lot of people warning of after effects here - I was very nervous for my first one and tense I reckon, but I only found it uncomfortable and definitely nothing to worry about. Don't give her all the bad news..........there are plenty who are just in and out with no hassle.

Believe it or not if you run a search for it on myspace it show's the procedure.

I'm not going to post a link in case a mod raps me for posting pornograpic images but it's an educational video that was made in the states. Have a look.
