colling on macs/heat build up

i have my macbook now a couple of weeks, its no different to anyone elses macbook, she has fair heat buildup. i have a IBM thinkpad at work, with a vent on the side, and the heat is pumped out that vent STRAGHT AWAY,instead of leaving it build up inside, or having to make its way out the vent just below the screen, like on te macbook.
when i place my hand longside the vent area of the IBM, it pumps a fair bit of heat, but when i place my hand over the vent on the mac, there aint that much heat being pumped out, i wonder does it have anythin to do with the angle of the screen.
I dont think its the best of places for a vent either, ends up blowing dust onto the screen/keypad
i luv my macbook, dont get me wrong, but heat dissipation is a huge issue for a laptop and apple could have done a much better job.
I mean heat dissipation hits speed as well as battery performance.
o and another thing, i notice the fan can get quite noisy, a loud noisy powerful fan wood not have been needed if they just fitted a vent to the left hand side of the macbook!
    wat do u all think?

    p.s.
i also have it on a flat surface, i.e. a desk, massive plan of wood, when shes on my lap.

    talk soon
    ed

o on e other thng, i wonder do the macbook pros suffer form the same issue????

use smc fancontrol, can up the speeds of the fans as you need... bringing them up to 6000rpm should cool the mbp right down... though i guess leaving them there would decrease the life of the fans/make the whole thing louder...

Yeah my MBP (Macbook Pro) gets so hot you could literally fry an egg on it! But thats nothing unique to my machine! Like Nietzschean suggested, I use some fan control apps, and also I was recently given one of these cooling tablets as a pressie lately. I use that when Im at home. Its bascially an angled rest with two fans (usb powered) and it keeps the machine lovely and cool. When Im on the move I just try and keep it slightly angled with a book or something, keeps it nice and cool!

    are they noisy?
do they drain the battery if the macbook isnt hooked up to the mains?
wat about its ergonomics, RSI there on the wrist by the looks of things, could be wrong now.

I had similar problems till I came upon these
    http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html
    http://www.islayer.com/index.php?op=item&id=28
I turned the fan down to around 1000rpm with fancontrol and I can see the difference on the cpu monitor from the islayer istats program .It works much better now
also I bought a new iomega external hd which freed up a bit more hard disk space
