Hi guys sorry if it's been asked before but as my buddy is heading to the states next week I might pick one up at the reduced price :)

I understand it's region free for games but what about blueray movies ?
    Cheers,

Nope PS3 is not region free for movies plus its not region free for PS2 or PS1 games only PS3 games are region free, having said all that I bought a PS3 in Hong Kong and I have no issues with it, I can play all PS3 games and region free movies.

Blu-Ray movies are region locked but some are region free here is a good list:

PS3 games are region free, no problem there. But an american PS3 will not play irish(pal) PS2/PS1 games or dvd's. A lot of blu ray movies are region free but check before buying.

my question is kinda related to this so sorry for hijacking the thread!!

as i understand it PS3 games are (as of now) region free but will they stay that way?

in other words if i buy a load of games from US will some future update of PS3 make these unplayable on European machine or am i safe enough???

I doubt it very much. The games themselves have no region coding so I doubt that an update to the PS3 would be able to block them. The game publisher could insert region coding into the game though but this is also unlikely.
